Need help with road trip planning in Colorado...? |
Travel Info HI, I am planning a road trip in December (X-mas Week) in Colorado. We are thinking of flying into Denver and then driving to different areas. Can anyone help with routes, local attractions, cabins/lodges, etc for a weeks driving tour of the area? Or does anybody know of a website where I can find premade road trip iteneraries? Thanks. Travel Tips Well I live in Colorado I would recommend taking a trip to Estes park and Rocky Mountain National Park, if you like to ski, Loveland pass is a good place, Fort Collins is really nice, Red Feathers Lake is a nice place to rent a cabin for a couple of days, Winter Park has great skiing and really nice cabins, Colorado Springs is nice. Take a tour and railroad ride (yes even in the winter) down in Durango through the Rocky Mountains (Durango-Sliverton line). There is so much to do, it depends on what you like. Hope this helps in some way. Others Hello - What is it you are looking for? In December, especially around Christmas time - the roads can be a bit tied up - Either by snow, and/or students on break. Skiing/Snowboarding is probably the biggest thing to do at that time of year. Everything in the mountains will be busy. You may want to pick a spot to go to. Then look into attractions in that area - Vail - Aspen - Telluride - Keystone/Breckenridge - Winter Park.... Then there is Boulder and Denver for city like fun. South is Colorado Springs ( Pikes Peak ) and further Pueblo and Durango. Book condos and or hotel now - They WILL be full. Wyoming and Utah are also nice - Just watch the highway - They shut down ALL the time. Then you are stuck for an hour to days. Good Luck Yeah, December is really not a good time to plan a road trip in Colorado. If you recall, Christmas week last year, we had two paralyzing blizzards that left many travelers stranded for days in not-so-nice accommodations. That doesn't mean you shouldn't come visit - what you should do is plan to stay at only one or two locations and have backup plans in case the weather isn't good. Also keep in mind, the most popular destinations, the ski areas, are outrageously expensive during Christmas week, and are probably booked already! But areas that don't have skiing, like Estes Park or Colorado Springs or Denver, are wonderful in the winter and have lots to do. Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and winter is gorgeous there. You can snowshoe and watch the elk wander around town. Colorado Springs is a nice town where the Garden of the Gods and the Air Force Academy are located. Denver is a great city with tons to do. Road trips in Colorado are much better in the summer - if you can only come in the winter, then consider a smaller itinerary. www.tripadvisor.com for loads of great information on wherever you want to go. I used to live in that area. My favorite places: Denver: Grizzly Rose (58th ave off I-25, Denver) Denver Aquarium Denver Zoo (might not be open) IMAX (down town) Estes Park: Grubsteak Restaurant Stanley Hotel (home of the Shining, Dumb & Dumber) Rocky Mountain National Park (Great Scenery) These are just a few of my favorites. If you have any questions or need any more ideas (I have too many to list) you can email me. Former resident and hunting guide Just be careful... first week here i drove not a mile and almost got lost. The roads are seriously confusing for the first time. |
