What is the Hampden neighborhood of Denver like?

Travel Info
I am looking to move and found an apartment near E Iliff Ave and Dayton Way, near the 83. I believe this is in the Hampden neighborhood. Can anyone tell me what this area is like? Is it a safe area to live? Is there a lot of crime? Are there good places to shop/eat near by? Or is the area rundown? What are the demographics? Thanks for your help!

I live outside of denver but work near the area you are talking about. It is a diverse neighborhood. Mostly it is poor and mexican. There are a lot of commercial factories and businesses there.
In response to the other comment. Denver is like any other big city. Some areas are great and some look rundown. Denver does offer a lot for many people and it's diversity makes it unique. It is also a city with growing pains as it's population has exploded in the last 5 years with no end in site.
I hope this helps.

I don't know, but they showed Denver on a recent episode of A&E's Intervention and it looked pretty ratty. I always thought it was like all mountains and people singing Rocky Mountain High and stuff.
I believe you're referring to the Hampden Heights neighborhood. There are certainly no factories there! It's a middle class area bordered by a lot of retail on Hampden, some commercial buildings, but mostly apartment complexes. Here is a description from a Denver Neighborhoods website:

"Hampden Heights -----
Hampden Heights, northwest of the Cherry Creek Reservoir, lies in the far southeast portion of Denver and extends from East Cornell Avenue to East Girard Avenue and from South Geneva Street to Ulster Court. The neighborhood is a golfer's paradise, adjacent to three large golf courses and two country clubs: John F. Kennedy, Meadow Hills, Heather Gardens (course and club) and Los Verdes. The area is rich with shopping and entertainment attractions. Nearby parks offer condo-dwelling residents an invitation to stretch out under a tree or toss a ball. "

This website has crime statistics for all of Denver, divided by neighborhood: http://www.denvergov.org/2007crimestatis...

This is not a hard-core urban neighborhood whatsover. I'd consider it relatively safe and quiet, comparable to suburban areas. You'd find decent apartments here for the money. It's also fairly close to the new Light Rail Line to downtown, which is convenient if that's where you're working.
Not a bad neighborhood, and pretty good access to the city and the SE metro area. It may not actually be Denver, though, I think that area may be unincorporated Arapahoe County. This is not an urban area - it would feel pretty suburban, actually - meaning that you really need wheels to go anywhere. There is bus service that would take you to the train service, but this really wouldn't be an area where you would walk to the market or to the corner for a coffee.

There is shopping on Havana nearby, further SE on Parker Road, W on Illiff after it turns into Evans, or on Hampden. (Illiff is 2200 S, Hampden 3500 S)

No one calls highways by their number here, by the way, so "the 83" you would call "highway 83", though most people wouldn't know what that is either since highways other than Interstates are generally called by their street name. I believe that Hwy 83 is Parker Road.

If the price is right (and it fits your lifestyle), I would move to that area without hesitation.
