Are the hospitals in the Detroit Metro Area Safe?

Travel Info
Hi Everyone,

I got accepted into the dietetics program at the Detroit Health Departmenton Taylor St & will be taking classes there, then 4 days a week I'll be doing my clinical rotations at the hospitals in the Detroit metro Area ( I don't know the exact hospitals yet until I get my schedule, but I assume they are somewhat near each other). How is the area? Is it safe? I live in Dearborn, so I will only be in Detroit basically from 8 am to 5 pm. I just moved from California & don't really know what to expect.

I did read a previous answer from someone stating if you have out of state plates, you're a target?? Is that true?

Thanks!

Travel Tips
no out of state plates do not make you a target!

depending on the area itself - you'll be fine. i traveled to and through detroit for years as a single female. let's be blunt though.... travel in well lit areas, if you're a female - keep doors locked and walk with determination. if you walk around all "scared" and jittery -- you will become a target for mouthy kids anywhere. i don't recommend riding around alone in a beemer or other vehicle thats ripe for the "chop shop".

i hope you come to enjoy detroit and spend some time there after 5p. greektown and mexican village are super and the weekend festivals in hart plaze -- super! again though -- don't walk around like you are intimidated by the world -- you are there to enjoy yourself -- so do it!!!

WJR used to have the best traffic reports - pot hole reports too. before winter hits i will recommend finding at least 2 if not 3-4 routes into the area. between construction and accidents - you'll need to know your way around. oh and be nice to the truckers especially around Clark off 1-75 -- they can and have come in very handy!

Yes. The local gangs do target out of staters. I would perhaps take a bus? But be wary of muggings, I WOULD NEVER GO OUT AT NIGHT! At least not alone. Consider purchasing a firearm.
I lived there before, you want to stay away from Henry Ford Hospital system. I had a friend to do a residency there, while trying to complete medical school. She hated it, and she said that the hospital takes very poor care of its patients. You should try to work in any hospitals in the suburbs such as Southfield, Dearborn, etc. Good luck!
Detroit has an excellent health system. From the DMC (Detroit Medical Center) second in size only to the Mao clinic, to Oakwood health systems to Henry Ford.health systems and so many other award winning hospitals too many to mention here. And I have many family and friends who work for Henry Ford and are very proud. It is my hospital of choice. So I don't know why you would get a negative referral from your other answerer. It's where the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings athletes go.
Unfortunately, you have a lot of ignorant people in the midwest - especially here in Michigan. Detroit is like any other major city. If you've ever been to LA or San Francisco, use the same common sense to avoid crime (lock doors, limit travel at night, etc). Do NOT take the bus - being the "Motor City" we have no good public transportation. I've driven a Lexus and BMW for years and never had a problem. All hospitals have gated parking with security guards so you shouldn't have any problems.

Lastly, unlike most cities, Detroit does not have a gang problem. Dearborn is Ford Country, very nice, safe, and clean. Most hospitals are very good: DMC & Beaumont have the best reputations as far as research hospitals. My aunt works on Taylor St. in Vital Statistics.

WELCOME TO DETROIT! Feel free to e-mail me if you need anything.
I don't understand your question. This is Detroit, not Iraq. Of course the hospitals are safe. Why would it not be?

The best hospital systems are Beaumont, DMC, and Univ. of Michigan.
Ya know...I've lived around the Motor City for about 40 years. I have never been mugged. I have never been raped. No car jackings, nothing. Mind you, I do not live with my head in the sand...I am aware as much as I can be of my surroundings. If I get a 'feeling' something's not right, time to leave.

This city is still living with the stigma of riots, murder city, etc...events and statistics that have long since mouldered. It's not fair, yet some how all this crap about the city lingers. I don't get it.
I'd be more worried about going to Washington DC as a tourist than I would to work, or classes...or any other downtown establishment here in the Motor.

Do what you would do in any city...head up when walking around on streets & especially parking lots, be aware, have a cell phone in case of emergencies... be as self sufficient as you can be. (fix a flat in the trunk, or at least a service/insurance company/tow service on speed dial)

I've never heard of out-of-staters being targets. If that were true, there would be a rash of 'victims' from Ohio, and Ontario...we see out of state plates here every day.

Cali? North or South? Winter's coming...consider leaving a pair of winter boots (something that comes up to the ankle is good, and has good tread) and a pair of thick socks in your car for the winter. Scraper, lock de-icer... who knows what kind of winter we'll have this year. We haven't been in the 'snow belt' for awhile, it would just be your luck that this is the year.
Probably the biggest irritant you're going to have is the weather, occasionally traffic (unless your from SoCal, and you're used to it), and finding what you're used to. You know we have Trader Joe's here now (we're all proud, lol)
Enjoy... relax, it's really not that bad.
