Can someone tell me a fact about the Soo locks and the Macinaw bridge? |
Travel Info I already have The water leavel thing for the soo locks and that the mackinack bridge is 5 miles long Travel Tips How many facts would you like...lol You can walk across the mackinaw bridge once a year on Labor day As far as I know one car has gone over the side of the Mackinaw Bridge. About 10 years ago or longer a Yugo went over the edge, into the water and the driver died in the accident. The center of the bridge has cement in the outer two lanes and steel grating in the middle two lanes. This allows for water and snow to fall thru, and for movement of the bridge in the wind. Others ive done both a million time... once they start painting the one side of the mackinaw bridge by the time they get done they have to start all over again it takes that long to paint it when the weather is bad - snow, ice wind, they do not shut the bridge - they do however, hold off all traffic and team up smaller vehicles along side the 18 wheelers and that is how they travel across! here's one other but it is not about the Mackinac bridge that people think of.... did you know an ice bridge forms from Mackinac Island to St Ignace?! it's true and after Christmas they line the Christmas trees along the path to show the way! sometimes it's still viable in March and it's the only way for the staff members to get onto the island to start getting the hotels and such ready for theupcoming season!! (okay they could fly too but it's rather pricey!) If a person is too afraid to drive over the bridge, there are workers on staff that will drive them across in thieir own (scared persons) vehicle. |
