Why so many burnt down homes in Detroit and sparse areas?

Travel Info
I was looking on Google Earth, and the downtown part is really condensed, but when you look at the surrounding suburbs it's very sparse and lot's of open green areas, and many of the homes seem to be burnt down or really dark, and abandoned looking. And the homes have so much space between each other, like just big huge green patchs of fields, most cities it would be prime real estate there? Is it because of crime or thats just how it always was?

Travel Tips
Detroit is the mother of all urban blight.

I think the people living in the areas probably burn the abandoned houses to stop them from being used as crack houses, thus keeping at least some crime away from their areas.

I grew up there and urban flight was always a large factor for anyone wanting to raise a family safely - the end result is that the ghetto moved into where the working class people used to live 50+ years ago...they all just kept moving further and further away from the city and taking their money with them! Nothing left behind now but waste.

Detroit is a very sad place. A very, very sad place. What you are seeing is what's left of Detroit. The city of Detroit has been left to rott, and all it's glory it used to have is no longer there. There are 20 story office buildings from the 1930s, that could be a 5 star hotel, like the ones in NYC, yet they remain empty and vacant and falling apart just like the rest of the city.
I guess no one wants to rebuild a home there. A year ago when I used to work in detroit near Davidson & Mound road I was on my way to work at 5:45am and there was a two story house completely covered in flames (I could feel the heat as I drove past) and the weird thing was that it was 1/2 mile away from a fire station. Detroit is just a shitty city

it was this house

Detroit is a terrible city to live in. Only the poor people stay there. Detroit has lost one and a half million people (1,500,000 ) over the last 35 years and there is so much crime all over the place. It's 87% black and has no tax base for services. The police force is no good and the police for the most part are very mean people who hate their job due to being over worked. Living in Iraq would be better than Detroit. At one time the great city of Detroit was a wonderful place but now it is a terrible nightmare to live in that city. The people have little or no pride. Just drive down any road in that city and look at all the trash. The city will never recover.
I think you are lying. Google Earth doesn't depict the city like that at all. What is your real agenda???
That is because the people who do live there are sick and tired of the Mayor and the City not doing anything about the abandoned house's that sit there. Rotting out...being used for Drug heads, crack dealers, rapists...no one wants that in there neighborhoods!!! So they take it apon themselves to burn and destroy there own City in hopes that soon the land will be cleared and one day someone will be able to build a nice home next to theres!!! The mayor of Detroit is a Pig..and he does not care about his people. He runs around with Prostitutes in his Escalade..eating at Cracker Barrell..his big fat *** needs to go on a diet, Save his money for his City and the People. Give his Escalade to "Mother Waddles" and ride on the Smart Bus, and Once in awhile Volunteer to pick up some garbage in his City. Instead of letting all the people who have nothing do it all for Detroit. I grew up in Detroit and it was a Beautiful City...but it is going to Hell, and not because of the people who live there. Because of the people who Run It!!!
