If you were mayor of Detroit what would be your priorit(ies) for improving Detroit/turning it around? |
Travel Info New jobs?-requires new industries willing to move (back) to the city where taxes seem to be higher, crime issues, "skilled" work-force issues; not to mention the continual loss of jobs in Detroit and the whole metro area due to problems of the Big Three. Remove/tear down vacant buildings and clean up the city?-requires more money, higher taxes, businesses and more people to increase tax base, etc. Try to entice more/new people back into the city to live?- requires jobs, better schools, businesses, shopping, better city services, and, a much greater sense of safety. Improve city services and/or schools?- population, job, and business loss inhibit the ability to do so with an ever decreasing tax base. Get tough on crime?-again difficult because requires greater police presence which requires more taxes which requires more industries, businesses, residents moving into the city;also partly requires eliminating abandoned homes/cleanup It all seems like a vicious circle-where to start Travel Tips If I was the Mayor of Detroit, the top six priorities I would do to turn Detroit around are; 1. Demolish ALL abandonded buildings. This would include Tiger Stadium, Michigan Central Depot, Book Cadillac Hotel, United Artist Theatre, and the Fort Shelby Hotel and homes all over Detroit. I believe that if you demolish buidings, less crime will occur. 2. Improve education by hiring teachers who are passionate about teaching the future leaders of Detroit. Teacher who come to work and do not work for pay but for the experience. 3. Revitalize Downtown. I would make every effort to bring in big time investors like Donald Trump to invest in Detroit and would start builing new skyscrapers througout Detroit. 4. Improve Public Safety throughout Detroit. I would make sure that there were police officers, firemen and firewomen, and EMS Drivers who were available to work at any time of the day or night and were passionate for keeping Detroit Safe. 5. I would improve the public transportation throughout Detroit and the Metropolitan Detroit area. I would install a mass transportation system in all nine counties including counties such as Wayne, Oakland and Macomb and I would have buses and trains so that Detroiters could get around more efficiently. 6. I would help to make Detroit a World Class City and make it a place where tourist from all over the world come to visit Detroit. I would also like to bring the Summer Olympics to Detroit and the Metropolitan Detroit area as well. Source(s): I use to live in Metropolitan Detroit for over 20 years. Other Travel Tips education, education, education. Detroit should be abandoned and sold for scrap. I kinda like the sold for scrap idea...but for some reason I don't think it would work. I DEFINITELY would work on the crime issue...maybe if they made CSI: Detroit crime would go down. I don't have any scientific proof of that...but you never know! And of course...education. Education in America has gone down the tubes. While you will undoubtedly get a lot of off the cuff OPINIONS on this, I don't think anybody here actually has the EXPERIENCE or training to answer this question in a practical matter. It would be like asking "How would you turn around Ford Motor Company? or Enron". Unless you've been a CEO over a huge organization, you really don't have the slightest idea what it would take. Detroit needs people to move in and also make the schools better. |
