I am interested in visiting Detroit this summer? What are places in the City of Detroit that I must visit?

Travel Info
I am planning to visit Detroit, Michigan this summer? What are some must see places to see while in Detroit? Also, what hotels are good to visit in Downtown Detroit and what kind of public transportation does it have?

Travel Tips
I don't recommend the actual city itself.
There is no public transportation in the city.
There are no good hotels in the city itself but in the suburbs they are much better.

I recommend the Airzoo in Kalamazoo, MI,
the space museum in Jackson Mi
and Michigan adventures theme park in Muskgeon.
The DIA is under a major remodel so I don't advise going there.most of the exhibits are in storage or cram into one gallery .

Others
If you are going in the summer time, you have to go to Comerica Park for a baseball game...however, you may want to get your tickets ahead of time since the fans have been coming out of the woodwork after last year's season. I live an hour south, so I don't stay there when I go, nor do I use public transportation (actually I'm rather adverse to public transportation period). I go mostly for the sports - especially baseball and hockey (or if my Bears are playing at Ford Field). I also go to MGM Grand casino (there are others there). There are several concert venues I have been to around the city. But beyond concerts and sports (and one play at the Fisher Theatre) hmm...not sure what else. I've heard the Detroit Zoo is good. The International Auto Show just ended so that's out. In Dearborn, right outside of Detroit, there's the Henry Ford Museum (I think that was a mandatory trip when we are kids. Since you are going in the summer time, you may want to consider taking a 2-hour drive to get to Sandusky, OH to visit Cedar Point (greatest amusement park ever).
There are many different sites that one should take in in a visit to Detroit, MI. Since you will be around in the summer you definitely have to take in a Tiger's game at Comerica Park. It is in this area that you could spend a couple days hitting the numerous bars and restaurants. A major point of interest is Greek Town which is a few blocks lined with old style Greek stores and restaurants. In this area there are also the Greek Town Casino where you could test your luck. During the summer months there are countless festivals that are going on all of the time, many of which take place along the river in Renaissance park. From the park and the River walk you can see Windsor, Canada and it's infinite points of fun.
These are just some of the stops that one has to make when in downtown Detroit. There are countless suburbs that each have their own fun things to do and sights to see.
I hope you enjoy yourself.
Not too much useable public transportation...downtown there is a mini-light rail train that does a big loop...it only cost $76 million in the mid 70s
There are MDOT and DDOT buses that serve downtown, but they are really inconvinient.
In Dearborn Mi, the henry ford museum is worth seeing.
Chicago is only a 4 hr drive away, and its probably the best thing to do while in detroit
Detroit Institute of Arts...Campus Martius......Canada......Tiger Stadium.......
Put the Motown Museum on the top of your list. The Gordy family really know how to do it right. Everyone gets a guided tour and the guides are fantastic. It is on the boulevard. Eat at the Roma Cafe and Union Street. Go bowling at the Majestic. If a game is in town go early and eat Nemos on Michigan Ave and take their shuttle. check out a play at the Gem. The historical museum and the DIA are right accross the street from each other and there are old homes that are hotels right there. Drive out I-94 and see the biggest tire in the world. Go to the Henry Ford in Dearborn and do the Village as well. After a night out stop once at Lafayette Coney Island, order at least 2 coneys and a cheese fries. They never write anythng down so see if you can stump them.
Everyone has a lot of good ideas
Frankenmouth is fun along with Canterbury Village, Huckleberry Railroad, Great Wolf Lodge and Mackinaw Island
It really depends on what you like to do and how far you are wanting to drive while you are in the area
Hope you enjoy your trip
