If you have lived near Detroit but not IN Detroit what is it like there? Would you do it again? |
Travel Info We may be transferred there but we don't have to. I'm just worried about crime, high schools and weather but I'll bet there's alot more to consider. Travel Tips I lived in and around Detroit for most of my life and as long as you dont live IN the actualy city, you'll be ok. The northwest suburbs (Birmingham, Royal Oak, Livonia, Bloomfield) are all really lovely, with good schools, low crime, good shopping and dining, good cultural events. And housing prices are really a steal right now. I dont know what market youre coming from but you will get a lot of house for the $$ in the metro Detroit area. The weather is cold in the winter, yes, but its not horrible, and not unbearable. Detroit itself is like any other big city, it has lots of good and unfortunately, more than its share of bad. If you have specific questions about neighborhoods or anything else, please feel free to emial me. Others I live in Detroit but I wanted to answer this question because I felt it wouldnt hurt to get one perspective from inside the city. My city is a beautiful place but it has been trampled and needs time to heal. It is slowly recooperating after many problems with drugs, crime and corruption. But the environment is not bad if you are used to living in a big city. It is no worse than NYC chicago or LA. There are alot of good people and good places in the city but you have to be careful and know where to go. The surrounding suburbs have seperated themselves, almost completely from us. This is why I wanted to tell you from a locals perspective; because METRO Detroit isnt Detroit. lived her for my whole life. I've never left for more than a week I was born and raised in Detroit, and moved to the suburb of Warren when I was 30 and that's where I live now. The surrounding and outlying suburbs of Detroit are wonderful. Royal Oak, Berkely, Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, etc. There are MANY places to live that are very close to Detroit, but worlds of their own. I have lived in the Detroit area all my life, and I don't see any reason not to. There are many places to choose from that fit EVERY lifestyle and income range, and LOTS to do! Hire a good relocation expert and I'm positive your experience here will be a good one! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/detroit,_mi... I would head for the hills and leave the entire state of michigan just because of the city of detroit If you don't NEED to be transferred to Michigan, then at this time I would chose to be transferred somewhere else. I say this because the business climate in the state is not that great right now and our governor doesn't seem to be doing anything to help improve that. Ok, now that that is out of the way. There are many areas in Metro Detroit that have low crime and great schools. In addition to some of the areas mentioned, on the west side there is Livonia, Farmington, Novi, Wixom and Northville. The city of Detroit is showing a rebirth in many of the areas and the movement of both the Detroit Tigers & Lions stadiums have helped spur that. Many of the old abandoned buildings are being converted to loft living and thus commerce is moving back into the area as well. Detroit has many wonderful things to do and see and just like EVERY big city also has areas that should be avoided. |
