Why was the former mayor of Detroit, Michigan who served from 1974 to 1994 So Successful?

Travel Tips
Successfull at what? He turned that city into a massive cess pool! Detroit is one of the worst cites in the world it has one of the highest crime rates in the nation! It use to be known as the murder captial of the world at one time. I believe Houston Texas now has that honor, but I am sure Detroit is still running a close second.

I can remember Coleman'ss interview on the TV show 20/20 he said that Detroit has to arm itself from the hostile suburbs! What kinda of a mayor thinks his city needs guns?

Need I remind anyone of the illegal African coins called Kregurands that he was keeping and buying?

Coleman failed to make much headway against the daunting social problems that plagued a city abandoned by its major industry and the owners of its wealth. In 1993, Young retired and a new mayor, Dennis Archer, was elected. Archer immediately adopted a more conciliatory attitude toward suburbanites and some business returned to the city under Archer such as the new Comerica Park.

Others
Coleman Young WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. Here are Four Reasons Why Young Was Ineffective and unsuccessful;

1. When Young was the mayor, you were FORCED to contribute to his mayoral campaign if you worked for the City of Detroit or you could be fired.

2. Under Young, the population of Detroit went under and some people were FORCED TO LEAVE.

3. Under Young, the Hudson Department Store WENT BANKRUPT and OUT OF BUSINESS. I believe the reason this happened because residents of the suburbs did not want to go downtown to shop and as a result, the store lost business and were forced to go out of business.

4. Young started Corruption in the City of Detroit and as a result, Corrupt Still Exist. It got a break when Dennis Archer was mayor but when Kwame Kilpatrick came in power, the Corruption Continued to this present day.

Out of curiosity, why do you believe Coleman Young was a Successful Mayor for the City of Detroit?
He was the 1st black mayor of Detroit and the black Detroit community looked up to a black politician , repetitively looking the other way and blindly re- elected him back into office and time again

In 1973, Young narrowly defeated Police Commissioner John F. Nichols {Caucasian} (who would later become Oakland County Sheriff) to become Detroit's first African-American mayor. {John Nichols would have won if a recount would have been done }
Young won the four subsequent terms by very wide margins.

Young's administration was controversial, and he found himself the subject of continued FBI scrutiny amid allegations of contract kickbacks, although no evidence was ever found. He was criticized for his confrontational style toward suburban interests and the apparent diversion of city resources to downtown Detroit from other neighborhoods. Young was generally popular with the inhabitants of the city proper, while generally disliked by those of the suburbs.

Young was a tireless advocate for federal funding for Detroit construction projects, and his administration saw the completion of the Renaissance Center, Detroit People Mover, Joe Louis Arena, and several other Detroit landmarks. He also negotiated with General Motors to build its new "Poletown" plant at the site of the former Dodge Main plant. This was very controversial, as the new plant was larger than the old one and the deal involved many evictions via eminent domain. Many, including the near universal opinion of white suburbanites, stated that the only reason Young wanted the Poletown plant was because it would remove a neighborhood that consisted of a constituency (Polish-American voters) that generally disliked him.

for Mr Conservative- Mayor Young didnt cause JL Hudsons to go bankrupt- poor sales in all its sectors due to Hudsons expanding into suburb Malls , the 1967 riot brought fear into going to Downtown , so finally the Corporation was sold

Dont give Coleman so much credit that he had the ability to topple a major Dept Store
He wasnt successful by any means. He let the city become runned down, Detroits businesses left the city, the neighborhoods became decrepid. While he was in office, devils night fire became a big problem. He was however popular. He was succesful of stamping his name on a couple of buildings he had built and for developing hart plaza.
Because he was for the people of detroit and no one else.
because of the economics of the city
HE DID'NT TAKE NO S**T FROM NO BODY AND HE'D TELL YOU JUST WHAT WAS ON HIS MIND AND DID'NT SUGAR COAT NOTHIN! HE WAS ALSO A GREAT LEADER AND HAD BRILLIANT IDEAS FOR A RUN DOWN CITY!
