I'm a student moving in to Detroit from August and I'm looking for a safe neighborhood to live.?

Travel Info
I'm looking at apartments in Jefferson Avenue (Downtown), North Park Tower (Southfield) and some places in Farmington and Bloomfield. Pls be kind enough to comment if you're familiar with these neighborhoods. Thanks!

Detroit - Safe Area

You have got to be kidding!
Southfield, Bloomfield and Farmington are of course further away, but you wont have to worry about waking up and your car being gone...as much.
Why would you want to move here anyway? Is there still time to pick another school?
If your looking for a safe place to live, stay away from living in Detroit. It's nice to visit for the day but not to live in. You should look for a place in Royal Oak, or Ferndale. They are subs of Detroit but very close, 20 min. at most. I live in Oakland county and visit Detroit but wouldnt live there. Southfield is so so.... never lived there but better then Detroit.
I was born and raised in Detroit. The area around Wayne State is actually very safe. It looks like the inner city and could be seen as grimy, but it's actually a very diverse area with a lot of doctors, students and artsy people. Aside from that area, I would suggest maybe Ferndale which is only about twenty minutes from Wayne State. I lived there too. Also Royal Oak is great. There are a lot of really cool shops, bars, restaurants and boutiques there. Farmington and Bloomfield is expensive. Just move to Royal Oak or Ferndale.
Email me if you need more info. I know ALL about the city and surrounding areas.

EDIT-Listen, I grew up in Detroit all of my life and a lot of the city is not safe. Those are the inner neighborhoods that you should avoid. But the downtown Area is pretty safe actually. Don't let these people get you all worked up about Detroit. Like anywhere else just mind your business and keep your eyes open. It's not Iraq!
I hate to tell you this but detroit isnt safe at all...I live here! As a student will you be financially stable to afford an apartment downtown? Some people have full times jobs along with a side job and still cant afford an apartment downtown...so take that into consideration. The only thing good that I could probably say about living on jefferson would be that you would be in the hot spot near all the action and events that may go on...but thats about it. Farmington and bloomfield would be a pretty long commute back and fourth to wayne state. You may want to consider some of the downriver areas of metro detroit such as Lincoln park, southgate, taylor, wyandotte and allen park. From those areas you could be at wayne state within 15-20 mins.

Good luck!
