There is a bus system. There is also an elevated train in the downtown area called the people mover.

We have DDOT (Detroit Department of Transportation)is a bus services that services residents within city limits and Smart (SOmething) Bus service) that services folks taking care of business OUTSIDE of city limits.
Detroit lacks effective public transportation.

Due to the inability of the city and the suburbs to strike a meaningful operating agreement, there are two separate bus systems (one for the city and one for the suburbs). Most buses are run-down and are scheduled few and far between.

I saw a previous poster mentioned the People Mover monorail system in the city center. It makes a small loop in central downtown and is not really helpful for commuting.

Unfortunately, you need a car if you are in Detroit.
