How did detroit get its name and what does the name detroit mean? |
Travel Info im doing a project on cities of michigan Travel Tips My family and I was driving yesteday near Fort Wayne in Detroit and we noticed a sign that said The Straits and then on the bottom it said de' trois which simply means The Straits in French. When the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac settled in 1701, it was on "the straits"(meaning the water between two lakes) that they name the land after. The city normally calls that stream of water "The Detroit River". Technically, it is not even a river..it is a strait. The river today has a very strong undercurrent that is very turbulent. It is very difficult for anyone to swim across without standing the chance of getting pulled under. I hope this helps you out some. I treat and distribute water for the entire Metro Detroit area. If you need any help with your project, don't hesitate to ask. Keith broken_main at yahoo dot com Others Detroit if French and comes from the original French fort on the site "Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit", i.e., the fort on the narrows or strait. Webster's New Geographical Dictionary and I lived there for 30 months and visited the historic sites. go to wikipedia.com chris is certainly right, and dont go to wikipedia, the people that edit that site can put whatever they please and there is often contradictory information. it is an awful website for research...that is if you're looking for the truth KiethD is correct as is Chris ... Detroit = the Strait pronouced in french, "daa twa" the 'r' and the final 't' are silent. just wanted to add that Michigan has some pretty funky names of small towns. Pompeii, Bliss, Hell, Paradise, Maybe, Butt, Disco to name just a few. Get out your basic state map and you'll be surprised at some of the names. sounds like a fun project. |
