DOT bus drivers pulled a wildcat strike ....? |
Travel Info The Bus Drivers say they're not safe from thugs and have asked the City Council to provide security. There are federal funds set aside to pay for police protection, but the Detroit PD doesn't have the personnel to ride the bus.. ... thousand of folks were left waiting by the side of the road, they missed their jobs ... so, if they get fired can they sue the bus drivers union for malicious mischeive? Or should the fired workers sue Detroit City Council because they will not allow Wayne County Sherrif Deputies to ride along because the Deputies "don't look like us" and don't live in Detroit. Since Detroit Police don't have to live in Detroit due to a 1990's non-residency law, does the rationale make sense that inorder to provide security you need to be black and you need to live in the city? Travel Tips As someone who takes the bus on occasion I must say that the driver's strike was an attention getter. I don't think riders could win a suit, but they could sue in the class-action arena. Call 1800 SAM. Last fall DOT secured Federal funding to pay for security, but as late as May 9th the Detroit City Council led by Councilwomen Monica Conyers, Sheila Cockrel, Brenda Jones, Alberta Tinsley-Talabi and JoAnn Watson voted against the measure, each citing varying concerns about liability, the desire for Detroit police to patrol the buses and privatization of the bus system. So, it seems that while the City COuncil was voting to Impeach Bush and Cheney, they failed to allow Wayne County Deputies to protect bus riders and drivers because the Council is afraid outsiders are going to take over the bus system. However, if the City Council does decide to change their vote and allow Deputies to ride shotgun, they might have a difficult time as City Council members Monica Conyers and Alberta Tinsley-Talabi are in Hawaii on a tax-payer paid junket. Goodness. The Council has lost its mind. Are they really afraid outsiders are taking over the City? I guess the "look like us" thinking has degraded to a point where throwing grapes is considered acceptable behavior. EDIT: Well, seems that the City Council decided to hire the County Sherrifs afterall. A rare miracle of sanity on the Council. I wonder if the Deputies riding shotgun will report the crimes they might see through the windows? We do need more boots on the ground ... the bus drivers had a really great idea. Other Travel Tips Ignore Fred Sanford, he's a Stuck up Chicagoen or New Yorker who likes to pick on smaller cities. Anyway, I do support them because a bus driver was harassed on the bus numerous times by a person and the citizens of Detroit deserve some time of safety on the bus as much money they pay. However, It wasn't fair either that the drivers did it without warning leaving thousands stranded (including me to an extent). WEre stuck in a hole here though because the WCSD refuses to ride the buses without a improvise by City Council and DPD doesn't have the manpower to do so. The drivers are expected back on the job tomorrow. However, they still may not return simply because there's been no resolution to the securty issue. So basically, it's a wait and see situation. I just watched the 5 and 6p Detroit local news 5/23 and researched this possible news via the local Detroit internet news site and found.................. nothing about a so called strike I am white born and raised, graduated from Cody High , does that make a difference Sorry. Under the "National Labor Relations Act" the bus drivers have the right to strike as leverage in contract negotiations. If any bus riders were "fired" because they couldn't get to work they do not have any legal course of action against anyone. There are always alternative means of transportation, albeit inconvenient, for them to use (cabs, car pooling, etc). |
