~ Looking for family fun in Dearborn, MI? |
Travel Info ~ This Memorial Weekend taking a family trip. First time in Michigan. Any suggestions? Reasonable hotel? Reseraunts? Fun things to do? ~ Thanks for your input! Travel Tips As others have said, the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are the places to go to in Dearborn. Greenfield Village is great if you have good weather since it's mostly outdoors and Henry Ford Museum has many famous artifacts from American history. Many people I know have particularly enjoyed the Ford Rouge Tour that the Henry Ford Museum offers. Among other places, you can also take a tour of the Henry Ford Estate (Fair Lane) and gardens and they have a very nice and inexpensive restaurant there called The Pool. And the Automotive Hall of Fame and Arab American National Museum are also in Dearborn. Dearborn has a large Arab American community and consequently has the best Middle Eastern food around (two of the best restaurants are La Shish and La Pita both on Michigan Avenue). The most famous restaurant in Dearborn is probably Miller's Bar on Michigan Avenue near Telegraph Rd. It's an unimpressive looking little bar/restaurant but they have the best burgers around and they frequently show up on lists of the nation's best burgers. For hotels, the best are the Ritz, the Hyatt Regency and the Dearborn Inn. Sometimes you can find great deals on any one of these (like less than $100/night) onlinen and they're all 4 star hotels. The Hyatt Regency also has one of my favorite restaurants - Giulio's - mostly Italian food. Other things to do that are within a short drive from the Detroit area include the Detroit Zoo, the Detroit Institute of Arts (which has a great Ansel Adams exhibit right now), the Detroit Science Center, the Museum of African-American History, Eastern Market, and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo. If there's a ball game going on that week, it's really fun to go to the new Tiger Stadium - there's so much to do there without even paying any attention to the baseball game and it's fairly inexpensive. A little further north, but still worthwhile, is Frankenmuth, a touristy German town that is one of the larger tourist attractions in Michigan. Frankenmuth is famous for their "Family Style Chicken Dinners" at Zehnders or the Bavarian Inn, their fudge, and the largest Christmas store in the world - Bronner's. Also very close by is a large outlet mall - Birch Run. Your family might also like visiting Ann Arbor - the home of the University of Michigan. The University has several great museums, including an art museum and a natural history museum that are worth seeing. Ann Arbor is also an eclectic little college town that's just fun to visit. There are lots of little non-chain restaurants and shops lining the streets around campus. Hope this helps you. Others Hmm..Dearborn doesn't actually have too many things to do. My dad grew up there, dn it hasn't really changed since he was kid. Detroit isn't too far from it, though, and Detroit has a lot of museums dedicated to many different subjects. You could try going to a museum or two, and maybe stopping at a park for a picnic lunch. Dearborn and Detroit have plenty of parks ^_^ Grew up less than an hour away from there. Tons of fun on the Detroit River that weekend. Downtown Detroit will have many things to do. Marsha park is wonderful. Go on line and check out what's happening, your not far from downtown. The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn is a sure winner for a family affair. You probably can pull up some coupons online. Of course there are the three casino's! If you haven't been the Canada, it's only minutes away, right downtown is the tunnel. Bring your passport to be safe or at least a birth certificate. Go see CoAmerica Park and Ford Field, home of the TIgers. If you like plays, we have the famous Fox Theater. But, it's across from Coamerica Park so you can walk over and take pictures. American Idol was there. You can also go online and bring up The Detroit Free paper and you'll find just about anything for that weekend. Have fun in our city. It's getting pretty wonderful. I grew up in Dearborn and it has changed a lot! It's a beautiful city with lots of parks. But while you're there you must visit The Henry Ford (Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village). Lots of things to do downtown Detroit too, don't let people scare you! Use the second link to find all kinds of things to do in the area. Take in the Detroit Zoo, it's north of Dearborn about 30 minutes. Have fun and welcome to my hometown! http://www.hfmgv.org/ http://www.greatstufftodo.com/ Krendi74 has the correct answer ... that person who said there is nothing to do in Dearborn is so misinformed that words fail. Go to the Henry Ford Museum ... you could spend a week there. A nice hotel is the Hyatt Fairlane in Dearborn. Not cheap, but reasonable. You might want to google Comfort Suites or Extended Stay hotels. They are hotels designed for business folks that will be spending a week or two, so they have little kitchenettes with a living/sitting room and a seperate bedroom. They usually have a pool and while they're not real "family" places, they are pretty nice and very clean. |
