What are the pros and cons of moving or visiting Detroit, MI ?

Hmmm, one day to visit a city and then determine whether to live there or not is a pretty difficult decision.

How about this idea ... you need someone to show you the city. Hire a film location scout to show you around. You can find them on-line.

Have them pick up up at the airport, check you into a hotel and drive you around all day. If you find such a person you'll be able to email back and forth and tell them the kinds of things you'd like to see ... houses to rent? Nightlife? Daylife? Heck, the tourist things like the museums would be nice to see, but shouldn't be the sole reason you move to an area.

If your company is moving you here then you should spend your time in that part of the city. Where you will be working will determine where you will be spending most of your time, hence investigate the part of town where you might live.

The City - and surrounding areas - have a lot to offer. What to live on a island? A highrise? A loft? A trailer? Housing is affordable, and certain areas are as safe as anyplace in the world, but there are parts of the city that would not leave a visitor with a good impression.

A location scout will cost you about $3 - 400 for the day. No worries.

EDIT:
I just checked on Youtube and entered the search term "Detroit" ... there is quite a bit of really awful stuff there - poor editing, horrid sound, shaky camera work and that doesn't even touch on the thugs that have produced there own propaganda - however, one video was very well done. Check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gf1znhee...

A fun, positive vid.

If forced to visit or move to Detroit, I'd visit. Right now the housing market has bottomed out and it seems that you can buy a house for less than a car. Industry has also taken a bad nose dive and finding a job that pays isn't easy.
Michigan itself is a great place, excluding Detroit. There are many places in Michigan that a "white Brit" can visit and have a good time.
I never lived in Detroit but I have been there many times. Detroit is pretty much divided right down the middle with rich and poor. It is dirty, the roads are horrendous and it is still very industrial. On the other hand, though, it is bursting with music and cultural diversity and personality. If you don't like cities and city traffic and congestion, then you will hate it. But if you are into all of that, then you will love it.
Either a visit or a more permanent stay would be fun.

There are many good pubs/clubs both in the downtown area as well as the surrounding suburbs (some of them actually know how to draw a proper pint). The city is great for sports, with football, basketball, hockey and baseball all providing lots of fun and great crowds. And there are the casinos. This fall will mark the return of the Grand Prix to Belle Isle.

As others mention, the housing market is down, which is great for people moving into the area, as you can get some really nice houses for less than market value.

I am a lifelong Detroiter.

Detroit is going through a rebirth. The cities downtown has been transformed into a viable living, working and playing environment. There are new condo's being built everywhere. The city has a great nightlife on weeknends with great restaurants, 3 Casinos, nightclubs.

We have a Wayne State University which is in the heart of the city. The lifestyle is urban with a fling. It sits in the Cultural Center, home of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Main Library, The Detroit Science Center just to name a few.

Near the Cultural Center is a the Detroit Medical Center, home to Detroit Receiving Hospital, a tier 1 Trauma center.

There is a lot happening in Detroit right now. I am sure a visit would encourage you to consider a move.

By the way, we are home of 3 major sports teams in the city, which i would say designates us as a sports town.

In addition we are home to one of the largest collections of pre WW1 buildings. The architecture alone is worthy of a visit.

Hope this helps

I was born and lived in Detroit or the metropolitan area most of my life. Now I want to move. The only good things we have are coney islands and good ribs shacks. There are a lot of clubs downtown that are poppin on Friday nights. No amusement parks unless you count cedar point which is two hours away in Sandusky OH. The best things to do is go to a concert or show at the fox or Pine knob or a game at Joe Louis, The Palace, Ford Field or Comerica Park. Not too much happening here besides all the clubs.
