How dangerous is Detroit?

Travel Info
Next month I'm flying from Houston, TX to Detroit, MI for a concert. My boyfriend and I are only staying for about two days and I plan on renting a car. I assume public transportation might be too dangerous.

Can someone give me some tips and possibly some realistic expectations of the city and location of the venue? The concert is at the Fillmore, formerly State Theatre.

Travel Tips
Very Dangerous, I 'm a former city cop. The city is hiding a lot of stuff. Car break-ins are on the rise, so are muggings, personal theft is the rise.
Hookers at every bus stop and corner. The city is very dirty, the city dump is much cleaner. The main roads in the city are filled with all kinds of garbage, (car parts, etc) The road are also filled with pot-holes, . Park your car in a secure lot. be prepare to pay at least 20 bucks for parking, and there is not a whole of parking either. The drivers are very awful, be care-full most drivers here treat the roads like it is like a NA SCAR race.
DO NOT CARRY A PURSE!
The theater is not that great of venue. Very Dirty and a rude staff. they just recently had a rape ,and a stabbing there. (that was not reported to the public, and it won't be) Do not have the theater valet park your car. Stay far way form the city bus (very bad drivers) ,do not get on the city bus, they now have Wayne County Sheriffs riding the bus to curb the violence.

can go on and on about the city ,
PLEASE BE CAREFULL!

as safe as any other big city.keep away from the run-down areas and same at night. good places to stay I-75 and north of about 13 mile road
Well, there really is not any public transportation in Detroit. There is a bus system, but it is not one that you would want to be on. (the company will be questionable)
There is a "People Mover" downtown, which is basically an elevated train/tram that runs between the "tourist" areas of Hart Plaza/Riverfront and Greektown.. stopping by the home of the Tigers and the Lions. (if the Detroit Tigers are in town on one of your days, the games and the stadium are a lot of fun!)
Are you staying downtown?
There are casinos to visit as well. (I don't know your age though)
Or, since you are renting a car, (and have a passport?), you could cross into Windsor, (Canada), and go to Little Italy for dinner. (check that out with your car rental copany as well)

The Fillmore, formerly the State Theatre, is located in a good spot.. just across the street from teh Tiger's Stadium, (called Comerica PArk), and next to the Fox Theatre, which shows larger, Broadway-type shows. Parking there will be about $15. (to park in the Fox lot) You could park further away, down Woodward to save a few bucks, but it will be late at night when you leave, so I advise you to just pay the extra to be close.
There are always Detroit policemen in front of these 2 theatre and the stadium, directing traffic and moving people along during major events, especially if the Tigers are at home. (go to their website and look up game schedule to get an idea of how bad traffic will be) So do not worry about safety.
But don't be stupid either: don't carry a lot of cash or wear a lot of jewelry, etc.

I take my 6 year old daughter to night games at the stadium and park right outside of the doors for $20 and have never had a problem. There are sometimes pan-handlers outside of hte stadiums and theatres.. just keep walking. (again, park close to avoid being bothered)

Next to the theatres is a Johnny Rockets hamburger joint that is the worst of the chain... AVOID. Instead, next to teh Fox, go to the HockeyTown Cafe or eat in GReektown before the show.

Greektown and is nearby and should not be missed. It is a jewel of Detroit. You can park right at the end of the street in a well-lit lot and walk through the area. Lots of Greek restaurants, cafes and bakeries and the GReektown Casino as well. (have to be 21 to get in)
If you are feeling very comfortable driving around and want good Mexican, we have an authentic Mexican Town as well, on the way to the Bridge to CAnada, off of the freeway.

If you stay north, in the suburbs, go out on the town in Royal Oak. Very trendy and hip.. people go out to see and be seen.. walkable town full of eclectic restaurants, cool bars and tons of coffee shops.
I love Detroit, so much to do and see....try some of the local pop also, it is so good...vernors or a faygo pop ( soda pop
Fillmore(State Theatre) is on a major Detroit street. I doubt you'll run into any danger. It's just like any other city. When there are major concerts and events the area is always patroled. I lived in Detroit for 20 years and nothing dangerous has ever happened to me or anyone I know. Don't believe the hype.
Listen to the Former Police officer. I couldn't have put it any better my self. I grew up in Detroit and now live in Houston and whenever I return "home" for a visit I levae more depressed that the time I did the time before when I was there. And with all of unemployment there it makes it all the more depressing
Its not dangerous if your don't bother people and mind your own business. It is just like any other big city. Don't bother anyone and they won't bother you. I walked down the streets of Detroit Saturday alone coming from a ball game and no one said a word to me. I passed by about 5 homeless people and they just kept right on doing whatever they were doing before they saw me. If you can survive in Houston you can survive here. Just use common sense.
