What is the real reason people don't want to live in Detroit Michigan? |
Travel Info What is the real reason people don't want to live in Detroit Michigan? Travel Tips Unions destroyed the American auto industry plain and simple. You've got non-skilled workers getting paid more than what they're worth which drives up the price of the car. This means less money for engineering and dependable parts. With the rise of the Asian automakers (see Toyota and Honda), they built quality cars for less money because they don't have unions in Japan. They last longer and are all around better vehicles than American-made. So, when American cars started becoming less and less desirable due to our overseas competitors, Detroit, which was the heart of the American automobile industry, took the biggest hit. That means layoffs and shutting down of plants. No jobs means less people and more crime.I've been to Detroit Michigan...used to live in MI, but never lived in Detroit. Detroit is heavily populated, and it is not very safe to live in certain areas of the city. However, not all of it is bad-you just have to find the good parts of the city. The crime is high in most areas, but some areas are safe, like near Children's Hospital and the museums and such. P.S.-Have any of you ever actually been to Detroit, or are you saying that because of what you hear on the news? I used to go to Detroit all the time, at least once or twice a month. Have you ever been there? Nuf said! Take your pick: crime, bad schools, limited public transportation, poor white collar job prospects, and lousy weather. There's not much to see and do within the city limits, and most of the good shopping is in suburban malls, with limited shopping in the city itself. Of course, these factors make the cost of housing very low. Please note that these comments apply to the city of Detroit itself and not to its suburbs, some of which - such as Bloomfield Hills and Grosse Point - have very nice homes, good schools, and access to good shopping. Crime...high unemployment...horrible school districts...outrageous rents/housing sales...bad winters. Another reason is besides the Jackson 5 and the auto industry (as well as Motown)...there isn't much to do there. It's not known for it historical sites or being a good place to vacation. Here in Philly...there is a lot of historical stuff to see....sites where films such as Trading Places, 12 Monkeys, Invincible & Rocky were filmed...it's 1 1/2 hours to Atlantic City...2 hours to NY...2 hours to Baltimore...the housing rates are more affordable than NY or Baltimore....great restaurants....great colleges...plus we have casinos coming and a lot of free activities you can do during the summer. No Jobs (Detroit didn't diversify; they kept their focus on the failing US Auto Industry). Crime. Nothing to do. The "Downtown" area sucks. Nobody is out walking. The population peaked in the 1950's and has gone down ever since. |
