Travel Info Is the Dominican Republic dangerous to go to? Travel Tips It can be if you leave your resort at night, just like any place. Puerto Plata I had no issues, but Punta Cana, I wouldn't even think about it. Most hotels in Puntal Cana have everything from shopping to Disco's so you wouldn't have a reason to leave at night, during the day is fine, just be aware of your surroundings. =) Others any place can be dangerous to go to... you have to be smart and read about the locations...plan your trip and know where things are located...i went to Punta Cana and it was not dangerous at all...i felt comfortable walking outside of the resort and go shopping. They protect the tourists, it helps their economy We have been there twice and loved it. I would not go off the resort unaccompanied in the areas we have been. But the weather and beach is fantastic. There is plenty to do at the resorts and they have some really cool excursions. I highly recommend a trip into real life Dominican Republic. Makes you feel very privileged but also makes you appreciate the simple life. If you go take some little things like sweets and stickers or pencils to give to the native kids. We had friends who went out on their own and they felt very uncomfortable because of the pressure from vendors. And they were from NYC. I would definitely recommend it. A beautiful place. I live in the Dominican Republic, and this country is safer than countries in Europe and the Usa. The tourist reps and hotels tells it is dangerous, because they wanna that you stay inside to spend some of your money and also try to sell you the excursions inside, because outside they are a lot cheaper!
