Things to see / do / buy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic? |
Travel Info I'll be in Santo Dom. in a week on an arch. dig and will be in the city for a couple of days. Can anyone recommend things to do or places to see while I'm there? Things to do? Nightlife spots? What about shipping gifts back to the States? I'd like to make the most of my time in the city and see/do as much as possible. Thanks! Travel Tips Shopping in Santo Domingo will turn up unique and interesting items, from crafts handmade by local residents to amber and semi-precious stones. Look for fine art, fashions, ceramics, and, in particular, the coffee, rum, and cigars that South America is famous for. Of course, like any other large city, Santo Domingo has tons of malls, shopping centers, and supermarkets. Major chains from all around the world are continually moving in and setting up shop. While tourist-related amenities are usually open all day, many other shops close down from 12:30 to 2:30 for Siesta. The amount of items you can bring back to the United States Duty Free Varies, but generally, $800 worth of items can be brought back duty free including 2 liters of alcoholic beverages. The limit is set by United States Customs, and you should always check with them prior to departure to verify the amount and items that can be brought back duty-free. Duty-free shopping is also available at airports and at various locations in the city. All duty-free items must be claimed at the airport prior to departure. If you bring back items exceeding the duty-free total, you will be expected to pay duty at the airport where you claim your items. Cash and credit cards are accepted, but checks are not. For more information on duty and regulations, visit http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacati... Horse racing is another favorite activity to be found in the city at Galapagos Hipodromo V Centenario. They have a restaurant and admission is free. With water, water everywhere, there's not a drop to waste. Go swimming on any number of pristine, white-sanded beaches, or rent a jet-ski (though all waterized motor vehicles are forbidden during Easter week, due to the high volume of tourists). There are many parks in and around the city, such as Mirador del Sur Park, useful for jogging, biking, backpacking, and other outdoor sports. Every major resort will have a tennis court. One-stop shopping for tickets in Santo Domingo, be it for sports, concerts, or theatre, is Ticket Company. Go there for an event calendar that will help you make your choices. =) Others Plaza d麓Espa帽a, Zona Colonial = House of the Columbus Family, all the monuments there, Calle de las Damas, El Pantheon, La Cathedral, El conde ( shopping), Parque Independencia, Los tres Ojos, El Acuario, El Faro a Colon, El museo de l麓Hombre. To see all this you need 2 to 3 days! Have a nice trip! A tour operator Gilbert Make sure you go to El Malecon at night because the casinos and clubs along the strip are nice. Also, if you want to do some great shopping go to El Mercado Modelo...its located en la zona colonial but I cant remember the street at the moment. Go to el conde also for some great shopping and to see all the sights. Gilbert made some great suggestions too |
