Dominican Republic - safe? |
Travel Info I'm looking at going to the Dominican Republic this September - I've heard from a few people that you can't really leave the resorts due to safety issues - want to know how easy and safe it is to get out and about to explore - or is it really safer to stay in the hotel? Travel Tips We went in April and it is much safer in the resort, we were told it was safe during the day but definitely not at night and that was off someone who lived there. He also told us never to wear gold when you are in the streets because there are a lot of people on mopeds who will just pull it straight off you, like if you've got your arm out the window of a car and you've got a watch on they will just grab it and ride off. Obviously they are not all like that you just need to be very careful just incase. We had an ok time but honestly the Dominican Republic is not all its cracked up to be. Others I have been there and loved it!!! Great holiday but...it isn't as safe as it could be. You can go out on trips with big groups and be fine but i would only go out of the resort during the day time and stay near the resort. If you would want to go out at night i would go out in larger groups and stay in a resort near the town. good luck and if you go have a good holiday!!! beth xxx It's safer in the resort areas. I spent two weeks in the DR over New Year's 2005, and it's definitely safe. I never stayed in a resort, but in hotels and guest houses. Like traveling anywhere, it's good to be conscious of how you carry $$ and valuables, but in my experience the DR was great. Plenty of other tourists there as well, so if you don't like feeling like the only visitor in an area, you won't. I'd recommend getting the Lonely Planet for the DR/Haiti - great resource. It's a gorgeous place, and there aren't too many spots in the world where you can see an Atlantic and a Caribbean coastline on the same island. I had a fantastic time in the Dominican Republic, would reccommend it to anyone, the resorts are quite big so the areas you stay around aren't as confined as i though they would be, as with anywhere different just exersise caution. its a poor country so dont flaunt anything in public. there a loads of organised trips out and about but they can be a bit exspensive, available cheeper if you book with the guys on the beach but then you will find out that your travel insurance will be void if anything goes wrong. but if you want a relaxing holiday doing little its a great place, Enjoy if you go. Molly L is the only one so far that has a clue, the others appera to be not so well travelled. The biggest mistake you can make is to even stay in one of those AI Resorts. It is much much better tos stay in one of the many small hotels, and go out and patronize a restaurant of choice each night. Going out in big groups will only attract attention. Exercise normal caution you would anywhere and you'll be fine. DOWN WITH AI HOTELS!!!! They are the real crooks! IS JUS SAFE IM DOMINICAN 100% PEOPLES DOMINICANS RULE IF U WANT GO TO LA ROMANA IS REALLY NICE AND PEOPLE ARE JUST LYING U CAN LEAVE THE HOTEL WELL IN LA ROMANA IM IN DR RIGHT NOW |
