Can anyone share their experiences of being in the Dominican Republic? |
Travel Info I will be taking my son to see his grandmother in the Dominican Republic this winter. (She was born and raised in NY, but now resides down there.) Can anyone share any experiences with me? I'll be in Santo Domingo and she has a house very close to one of the beaches. How are the beaches down there? Please any experiences would be valued. Thanks. Travel Tips What is there to do? Unless you are looking for a secluded, sterile, gated, all-inclusive resort and no interaction with the locals, Boca Chica is fun fun fun. Water Sports You will find a myriad of water sports available for rent or hire, right on the beach. Water Ski Snorkel Scuba diving Swim Go Fishing Banana Boat Ride Hire a yacht, have a party Kayak Windsurf / Sailboard Sailboat Walk / Swim out to the reef Jet Ski Enjoy the Nightlife. Visit a disco or outdoor bar Sip espresso while people watching at a sidewalk caf茅 Meet people and make friends Drink from a pineapple or coconut Try a Presidente, the most popular local beer. Try a cuba-libre made with locally produced rum. Do some drinking Dance Merengue See a show - the 3 big all-inclusive hotels have them nightly Ride a horse - on country trails or right on the beach Eat all kinds of local and international foods Gamble in the casino at the Hamaca Hotel Others When I went I stayed in Cabarete and Puerto Plata. The beaches there were nice, water can be very rough depending on where you are. I heard Punta Cana has the best beaches though. I visited Santo Domingo for the day and loved it. Its the capital and is urban but still has a lot of poverty. Their was a lot to do and see, so many historical sights, the vendors though can be very aggressive. Hi Christine! First of all welcome to the Dominican Republic! I麓m a tour operator here. Second the nearest beach of Santo Domingo is Boca Chica and that is 38 miles! You will and your boy enjoy this trip! I麓m from Europe and live here for many years. So anyway you gonna like it! It is completely different from the USA/Europe but very nice to live! Any need, any questions? just contact me platinioumtravel@yahoo.com Bye Bye Gilbert DR is great, the beaches are to die for, the city is nice, and you can consider going to the colonial zone, is nice too, there are lots of dining places, and also lots of discos, pubs and cafes. at the beah you can do watersports. belive me, you'll have lots of fun. I've never been to the beach in Santo Domingo (I normally visit only the northern part of the island). However, there are lots of museums and historical sites in the capital. Lots to do on the Malecon (boardwalk) and nite life is great. The beaches are great...hardly any waves (again depends on the beach), very nice water, clean beaches, lots of motorsports to do. I went about 2 years ago for a month (during Xmas and new years)...had lots of fun and there was always something to do. Enjoy! Hi Cristy I have to agree with Jose on this one, .... if your son's Grandmother's house is near Boca Chica, you are in luck!! I have been to Puerto Plata, Sosua, Punta Cana and Boca Chica. And Boca Chica is where I return to every year. It is a very small, friendly fishing village. If you like cappucino or espresso, there is a cappucino bar on the main street in town, that has excellent cappucino (my daily routine). The beach is fantastic! There is a man-made reef that encloses Boca Chica beach, which makes it clean and with no huge waves like Punta Cana. There are many really good restaurants/cafes in and near town. I've been to BCB every year for the last 8 years, and each time don't want to come home. Laura |
