Travel Tips Bananas, rice and beans, chicken, platinos (deep-fried platanes, which are kind of like bananas), mangu (mashed plantanes), and my personal fav, sancocho ( a stew of meat, carrots, peas, string beans, and sometimes pumpkin or sweet potato). The rice and beans, as well as the platinos and chicken, have a lot of fat and cholesterol. However, Dominican food's the best: Roast Pork, beans, rice, "mang煤" (mashed plantains), beef, cassava, pumpkin. "Sancocho" (a stew made from beef and vegetables is excellent).
