Does taking oregamax prevent traveler's diarrhea? |
Travel Info going away to Punta Cana worried about getting sick Travel Tips Uhh . . . in a word, no. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to take it with you if that's a supplement that you like or normally take, but I wouldn't take chances with herbal remedies when I'm away from home. I also wouldn't try a new herbal remedy for the first time when I travel . . . it would be a terrible time to learn that your allergic to it or that it doesn't agree with your stomach. Standard disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or medical professional, I just a guy that's done a lot of traveling. I'm telling you what I do, based on my own experiences. You should base what you do on your doctor's advice . . . I've been round the world for business to developed and developing countries many times. Sometimes it hard to find or describe the medicine you want/need, so I always pack: Immodium (loperamide HCl): In my opinion this is bar none- the best antidiarreal ever. I always take it with me when I travel. Pepto Bismol: Yes the pink stuff. Why? Because it helps the GI tract absorb water. Personally I think it helps get the stomach working properly again if it's been upset. It's complements Immodium quite well by helping with low grade upset stomachs, I don't think that immodium does much for the upset stomach part, just the diarrhea. Gas-X: Even if you don't have gas. The active ingredient simethecone helps relax the stomach (at least thats what it does for me). I find this medicine is a real lifesaver if you have stomach cramps. Antacid: For that general "something didn't agree with me feeling." Note that some antacids contain simethecone. I try to get the kind without . . . I use the Gas-X if I need simethecone. Hope this helps. If you have any doubts remember if its not boiled, cooked, canned, bottled, bagged (industrial packaging), or peeled . . . then it may not be safe. Watch out for ice. Many people have a can of coke with ice . . . depending on where you are, if the ice is from the tap it can mean trouble. |
