The old city is beautiful. I find that the city is easy to discover by feet. You can walk around easily, even at night most of the areas are well lit. The people are friendly and always ready to help you with some directions. I have read accounts of people feeling unsafe and being robbed. Although it can happen (as anywhere) i found there was a LOT of toursim police on the streets; nearly at every intersection. El Conde is a nice pedestrian area with nice shops and restaurants.

The downside is that you will be done roaming the city in a day or 3. After that it is worth to go see some of the rest of the country. Big aircondidioned tourist busses bring you everwhere seeing and the prices are very reasonable.

I hate Santo Domingo. There are a few nice streets in the Old part of town very pretty. Shopping is OK. Hotels are nice also.

Do not wear jewellery, they try to rip it off you even through the open window of a car. Also we hired a 4 x 4 vehicle with the wheel on the back. That got stolen and we had to pay a fortune for a new one.

My husband is Dominican his family live in Santo Domingo, given a choice I would not go there.
The hotel I stayed at was fantastic(Occidental El Embajador), although the hotel food was, in my opinion, not so good but I did hear quite a few other guess commenting on how good it was so I don't know. If you visit the old city and eat there, you will get a good meal. It is a beautiful place with beautiful people but there are too many poor people and you just want to help them all expecially the little children who beg for 1peso, which can't buy anything as a loaf of bread sells for about 30peso, that really got to me and I tried to give the childern as much as I could and even now I still think about them and worry, such beautiful children. And crime is pretty rampant too, especially robberies against tourist, even the taxi men try to rob you and often over charge, so watch out for that, there is also a lot of prostitution as people are so poor and there are grottos everywhere for this, American businessmen have a field day in Santo Domingo exploiting the young women there who can't do much better, it is sad because the place is so modern and beautiful that this shouldn't have to take place, bad governments I suppose.
