Does anyone know the Dominican Republic? |
Travel Info What is it like there? What are the people really like, because I have heard different pro and cons about them. What is the culture like? Travel Tips It's similar to other 3rd world countries, such as Mexico. I've been to both and was impressed with how beautiful the beaches are there. I stayed in the southern region (La Romona). The scenery is gorgeous and the people are very friendly. They don't speak very good English I found, but they do make an effort to help. As with any travel to a new place, you always want to take precautions. Don't go outside the resorts wearing lots of jewelry or carry around expensive equipment. You also don't want to drink the water.. It can have a bad effect on you! I would absolutely go back, it was a great time! Hope you enjoy! Others It is a poor country compared to US. Most people don't have cars , but many have motorbikes. They extend the seat and carry the wife and 2 kids behind them on the motorbike. The roads are terrible. Trucks and buses will run you of the road. The power goes out in many areas everday. Most resturants and hotels have backup generators. The people love to dance and party. The bars are called discos. If you go to rural areas there may be no power and farmers live in shacks and live off the land. Although the people are poor , they are very happy. Large cities often have areas that look like shanty towns. The weather is perfect year round but they do get hurricanes sometimes. There are many con artists out to get your money but you can't blame them. Even though the people can't afford nice homes or cars they always dress very sharp with bright colors. They are the friendliest people I have seen anywhere. Go there every winter to escape the cold. lol... morris gave u a good idea of what the Dominican republic is about.... that was very funny.... i am Dominican and my country is a very beautiful country.... every country has its good and bads, but it's definitely a place where you would want to experience.... from the countryside to the Caribbean beaches, santo Domingo has it all... I have to agree with Morris - I have been to the Dominican 4 times. I love the people - they are so friendly. I am always wanting to practice my Spanish with them, and they are always happy to help me! The Dominican is very poor - it is a completely different world outside the resorts. I was talking with a gal down there who was paying the equivalent of $1000 US dollars for a very small apartment. She said some days she doesn't have running water and on the days she does, it is usually cold. I have been to 'little Haiti' not too far from Punta Cana. Again, pretty poor, but a better life than what they had in Haiti. People have asked me why the Dominicans don't riot like the Haitians (left side of the island). My only guess is that there is plenty of food. The Dominicans support themselves off of their land. They are very happy people (the ones I have met). They will be happy to teach you the country's national dance - the Merengue! When I go down there, I bring school supplies for the DREAM organization. They distribute the supplies to the local schools. I highly recommend going. I really love the Dominican and the people. I will be going back July 2007. |
