Why do some Dominicans believe that Rafael Trujillo was a good man?

Travel Info
Trujillo was an evil man, and many Dominicans that I grew up with in New York were convinced, that he was a great guy. This man killed
hundreds of thousands of his own people in the Dominican Republic.
In the late nineteen thirties,Trujillo secretly massacred 15 to 20 thousand black Haitians that that crossed over to cut sugar cane. But to Trujillo's belief,he claims that the Haitians were "darkening the Dominican race."This was a man who was just as mixed like any other trigueno(olive skin) colored Dominican, who wore one of those George Washington like uniforms,he wore make up and threw on lots of powder to deny his mixed race heritage, and gave him self a whiter appearance. This was a man who hated everything that had to do with the African culture(which is beautiful) and showed favoritism to the European culture. This man swore up and down that he was of "pure" Spanish descent.
His formula to stay in power was simple, kill anyone that opposed
him.he was the worst dictator in Latin America.

Travel Tips
You are right in stating that some Dominicans believe that Trujillo was a good man, as you are in saying that he was a very evil man, that did all the things that you mentioned in your question, and a lot more.

I think that the main reason that people state that he was a good man is that they have heard about how good some things were during Trujillo's time (low crime, no public debt, strong national values, etc), which are the things that we are lacking right now in our country; and, somehow forget to take into account that there were a lot of bad thing (no freedom of expression, fear for your life, fear for your kids - specially if you had daughters, people couldn't get a passport, and even if you did, you had to give it to the passport agency for "good keeping" when you came back from your trip, you had to hang a plaque at home that stated that "Trujillo was boss", and many other things.

Also, I think that it's easier to imagine "positive" things than it is to imagine what it feels like to live in a dictatorship. Source(s): I am dominican, from a family that suffered a lot under the Trujillo years.

Other Travel Tips
well according to my mother the few reasons she came up with were that under his control there was no deliquancy in DR ..less crime and he also paid the US back any money they owed ..everyone else obeyed him simply cause they feared him
im dominican :)
Because for some he was good, otherwise he wouldn't have had a chance to remain in power. For some people Saddam was good, and so is Fidel for a lot.

Some countries don't need democracy - just a man with a big stick.
Well, my mom said, they go to school (if your fathers doesnt send you ) they came to ask why didnt send the children to school, obligatory. On school the give them food, cause the tiem was one very poor, the worldwar 2, the food doesnt come to easy. No delicuency, robery. Less haitians on Dominican Republic. Trujillo brings culture and good things to the country according to my mom. The people respect themselves. He bring to work agriculture chinese, spanish and arabic person, cause the people doesnt want to work like now, that foreign came to ours countries to work on agriculture, cause the native wasnt want to go.
There was law and order, the peso was stable with very little external debt like now and crime was down. Also families who supported him did well and those that didn't disappeared:)
