What do you think of the subway system they are building in Santo Domingo? |
Travel Info Will it help with the economic growth of the country? Travel Tips Well I have mixed thoughts about the Metro in Santo Domingo. I think that it is not being built at the best time possible, the country's economy is still not stable enough after the debacle of 2003 (the Baninter, and other banks' affair and Mej铆a's decision to bail out the banks' owners with tax payers money). On the other side, Santo Domingo is in dire need of good, reliable transportation. Hopefully, the other stages of the Metro will be built soon enough so that a lot more people will be able to ride the Metro and stop using "conchos" in order to get around. This will be the first step in the process of limiting the influence of the transportation unions (or shall I say gangs?) in everyday life. In last Monday's four hour transportation strike, these thugs were going around threatening drivers who took passengers. Others I think it is a terrible use of funds at a time when the IMF is here in the DR and things are so very expensive because of government graft and corruption. They have taken money away from Health and Education to put into the Metro. We have NO RELIABLE ELECTRIC and have many blackouts that have lasted as long as 22 hours in a single day. How would you like to be on a subway when this happens? They can fix the problems but that would mean less graft and corruption. |
