Retiring to Domincian republic? |
Travel Info Is it because you can cross overthe mexican border in case of an emergency or access to banks or doctors that hardley ant one retires to dominican rep or cosa rican Travel Tips You have to be kidding? The Dominican Republic is full of both 2nd homes and primary homes of people both retired here and going back and forth. I pay 750 US dollars a year for medical insurance which includes airlifting to the US for treatment I can't get here. Hell I almost paid that a month in the states for comparable insurance. It is 1 hour and 20 minutes by plane to Miami where the best health care in the world is available. It will take you several hours to get to the US from anywhere worth living in Mexico. I looked at Playa del Carmen and Cozumel but took a pass and went to the DR. The international airport (POP is the airport code) is 8 minutes from my home when there is traffic. 7 minutes without. We don't have very much traffic:) Mexico is dreary. The people don't smile, the women are not pretty and they can't dance. In the Dominican Republic the women all have a beautiful smile on their faces, will look you in the eye and not stare at the ground and man can they dance. Dominicans are amoung the most beautiful people I have ever seen. On the North Coast of the D.R. where I live when you head east the beach/ocean is to your left and the mountains are to the right. The land is green and lush. People are not hungry here even if they are poor. Fruit grows from trees and in such abundance they fall and rot on the ground. You cut a branch off of a tree and stick it in the ground and it grows. You see farmland that is fenced in and you will see the fenceposts growing. A full time maid cost 120 US dollars a month and a full time gardener cost 175 a month. The gardener will also maintain your pool and wash your car. My maid also cooks for me. When I travel I call before returning to have her prepare typical Dominican Cuisine because I miss it a lot when out of the country. All the food is fresh here. Brought in every day from the farms. Also remember, NY is 3 hours and 2 minutes by direct flight, Miami is 1 hour and 20 minutes by direct flight and Atlanta is 2 hours by direct flight. We get a lot of tourists here from Turks and Caicos Islands, St Croix and Bermuda. There must be a reason that the Dominican Republic is the most traveled to place in the Caribbean out shining even Puerto Rico which got less tourists last year. Rethink your thoughts. I lived on the other side of the Island for 2 years and went over to Santo Domingo on numerous occasions... I've thought about going back many times since I retired and may just do it yet. From a health standpoint, I also remember that I can just go into a Farmacia and buy my medications, just as in Mexico, rather than having to see a Doctor to get a Rx. Personally, I think the DR is the best place to be in the Caribbean... certainly cheaper than the American places. |
