Puerto Plata or Punta Cana which is best?

Travel Info
We would like to go at the end of March and are looking best resort to visit, we are not big on water sports but like the night life and good food.

Travel Tips
Stay away from Punta Cana. All they have are All-Inclusive Hotels and no other life. May as well go close by if you don't want to do or see anything.

All we have are beautiful beaches here in the DR. The whole cost lined with great beaches. No issue there.

In Puerto Plata Province you also have Sosua and Cabarete besides the City of Puerto Plata. There are very nice hotels in both places. Just do your homework.

Cabarete attracts a younger sports minded crowd. Kite Surfing and Wind Surfing are considered world class and the best in the Caribbean and the world. Long board surfing is also available and good but not considered world class.

There are many good to great restaurants which beats the heck out of the institutional type food at all inclusives. Both Sosua and Cabarete are very safe for tourists and there are rarely crimes against tourists. Dominican Police do NOT PUT UP WITH THAT.

If you want to stay in a resort, eat mediocre food at best and drink the watered down free drinks all day long perhaps Punta Cana is for you:)

I would head to Sosua or Cabarete. These towns sit between two Robert Trent Jones Golf Courses. One of them "Playa Grande" is considered the "Pebble Beach of the Caribbean" except unlike Pebble Beach which has 8 holes on the Ocean Playa Grande has 12 holes on the ocean.

You have casinos both in Sosua and Cabarete should you want to make a donation.

Have fun and discover the Dominican Republic and not get stuck in an all inclusive. The people are friendly, beautiful, always have a smile on their faces and man can they dance!

PS> if Puerto Rico was much better the Dominican Republic wouldn't have overtaken Puerto Rico in tourism last year:) Source(s): http://www.lifeinthedr.com/forum...

Other Travel Tips
Puerto Rico is much better
they both have beautiful beaches...but there's just something magical about Puerto Plata..( i may be a little biased since my mother grew up there)...you have the nearby mountains (mount isabel de torres), and lush green valleys. The resort prices are much less expensive than in Punta Cana if you're also looking to save some money. The typical food of the dominican food is pretty much the same through out the country, so that shouldn't really be an issue, as for night life...Puerto plata has 3 different casinos and different night clubs.. http://www.frommers.com/destinations/pue...
proud dominican.
i recommend punta cana ,since the beach is better and there are very nice all inclusive hotels
but nightlife is more fun in puerto plata
punta cana is much better, but if looking for a nightlife go to cabarete, best of nightlife cabarete is located a bit after puerto plata, hotels there aren't really great but i recomend viva tangerine, is a really great hotel, definetly worth it.
