Cheapest way to bring a car to Dominican Republic from USA?

Travel Info
I would like to bring my car over to the Dominican Republic for a year. I am looking into a business opportunity and would most likely sell my car at the end of the year to avoid having to ship it back to the USA. I have a Scion xB 2003 and a Saab 1999 Convertible. I would much rather bring my older car here to the Dominican Republic. I am aware of the 5 year limit on cars but I would even be willing to ship my car to Haiti and then bring it here to the DR. I have not owned my Scion for a year so I'm not sure I can bring that here. I've owned my Saab for 3 years now.

Bonus: Do cars here in the DR sell for more than there KBB value or other rubrics or cheaper?

Travel Tips
Whoa... You can bring in a car at "reduced duty" IF you have your residency one time.

You will get screwed and glued either way. Customs here is a mafia and they will take you on the ride of your life.

Forget about a 99' car. Aint gonna happen.

Best way to do this is to ship it to Puerto Rico and then take the ferry to Santo Domingo. More expensive than a flight but it is for the car as well. You won't be able to sell it here but you can bring it back to Puerto Rico and sell it there and it will sell for more in PR than in the States. PR is part of the US. Ferry leaves from Mayaguez to San Pedro de Macoris which is an hour from Santo Domingo.

Keep your plates on the car from where you come from.
That way you can also take your older car. You better also bring spare parts so your Saab isn't a Saab story! Never seen a Saab here and I have lived here for 6 years.

Also, best way to take a million dollars back from here is to bring 2 down and lose one and go home. Watch what you do here. Many people looking to eat your lunch!

Good luck

check with your local embassy.

There are laws that won't allow to bring a car in if it is too old. I think 5 years is the maximum age but you'll have to confirm. Also, if you've never brought in a car to the country you may be eligible to get it in duty free.

It's worth looking into! Check out the Dominican Customs web site below:
