backpack...stay in hostels. it's fantastic! you can bus your way just about anywhere you need to go. we traveled from dublin to cork to galway to belfast back to dublin in 2 weeks. we basically saw the whole country and had a blast. if you want more info or to chat about Ireland you can IM me on AIM ---> MestUp13277

Stow away in the wheel well of a Boeing 747. Bring snacks, oxygen, and a really well-insulated wind breaker.
Try to find a group. The rates are better, since hotels sometimes give better deals to groups, and attractions do as well. Other than that, I you can rent a cottage by the lake with no electricty or running water and a 2 mile walk to breakfast for dead cheap. Heck, i'd do it. If it's not you style, just book early. Also, Ireland also has a fairly good bus system [tour wise, anyway], so it's possible to plan it to where you dont have to rent a car. Hope that was a bit helpfull.
Fly to Shannon. Stay out of Dublin. It's smelly, expensive, and there's nothing to see (I know: live there). Galway is good fun.
