What an interesting question with some surprising answers. If you take 'Ireland' to include the whole island, then it's Newry in Northern Ireland at 106 kilometres (in old money, 65.8 miles). If you're only considing the Republic, then it is the ancient city of Kilkenny, which is 125 kilometres (77.7 miles) from Dublin. In reality it is a town but city by ancient charter and well worth a visit. Here are the other cities in the Republic of Ireland with their distance from Dublin)
Cork (259k, 161 miles)
Limerick (203k, 126 m)
Waterford (162k, 100.6 m)
Galway (217k, 135 m)

The north of Ireland has five cities (and their distance from Dublin):

Lisburn (155k, 96.3 m)
Armagh (136k, 84.5 m)
Belfast (167k, 103.7 m)
Derry [legal name is Londonderry] (235k, 146 m).

Wexford and Kildare are towns, not cities while Meath is a county!

Incidentally, Kildare and Wexford are towns while Meath is a county!

Pretty much every city in Ireland is close by, none of them are more than 3 or 4 hours away. The cities of Ireland (republic) are: Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny. Kilkenny's the closest.
did u know that the closest city to ireland is actually liverpool in england yes it is in a diferent country but its just an interesting fact
My brother in law
as Ireland is a pretty small country everywhere is quite close. but your best way to travel is by train. take galway for example approx 6 hours by bus only 3 and a half by train.
If you're in ireland take the time out to see the rest of the island!!
