Should I get Crocs or Tevas for light hiking in Ecuador?

Travel Info
I'm going on a study abroad trip to Ecuador. They suggest bringing "Tevas/similar or a pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet"...so I'm thinking I could get away with crocs?
I've never owned either, so could someone compare them on comfort and durability?

Travel Tips
I have both Crocs and Tevas and use them in different situations. If you are planning on doing much hiking, than you definitely want to go with the Tevas because you can tighten the velcro straps to make them snug and secure on your feet.

Crocs have a little fixed, non-adustable, strap thing across the heel, but they fit looser on your feet, sort of like a pair of slippers. While they are fine for going short distances or wearing around camp, they tend to shift around on your feet when going longer distances or on rougher terrain.

When backpacking, I take Tevas if I am going to be doing day hikes in them or need them to cross major streams where firm footing is critical. If I just need a pair to wear around the campsite at the end of the day, I take the Crocs because they are lighter to pack and the lack of adjustable straps means they are easier to slip on/off when I am getting in/out of my tent. Source(s): Frequent hiker and backpacker. Use by Crocs and Tevas for day/camp shoes (always wear hiking boots when hiking with a pack)

Other Travel Tips
I'd go with Merrels, they are similar to Tevas only better because they are generally stronger and you're not paying for the name... and they look cool too, usually. Walking sandals are great but mainly I used proper hiking boots (Salomon - excellent) you'll find that a walk may start light but if you're like me then you'll want to explore more and wish you'd had better footware!
chocas are the best - like tevas but cooler and more comfortable! have fun! not sure how to spell it tho'
