Where can i park in Edinburgh for free, near Cowgate?

i'll be up in Edinburgh this week, staying at a hotel near the Cowgate. Does anyone know of anywhere nearby (within a 20minute walk) like a residential area, where it is free and SAFE to leave my car overnight?

Aye, Tollcross. From the Cowgate, continue past the Grassmarket onto Bread Street, cross Lothian Road and turn right into Gilmore Place. Now look for options in the smaller streets on the left. As memory serves me right, you can park for free here. From Gilmore Place to Cowgate is a ten minute walk.
There's also a car park at nearby Lochrin Place, with a car shop near too. Not sure if it's metered or not, but worth checking out. It's not that well-known, but quite spacious.
