I live in Aldershot and as some have indicated it is or perhaps was an Army orientated town. Once upon a time it was known as "The Home of the British Army". Right next door is the famous airfield/air port known as Farnborough (the old RAE and currently still home to the famous Farnborough Airshow which is going on all this week) where Col. Cody tied his airplane to a tree for his engine tests. We're in the North East corner of Hampshire right on the border with Surrey - not far from Camberley and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst - about 7 or 8 miles away. We're about 30 miles West/South West of London.
Aldershot was chosen for the Army back in the days of the Crimean War mainly because it had its own water supply and plenty of land for army manoeuvres. I believe the water came or still comes in part from artesan wells.
Over recent years the Army has dwindled in size and moved to other locations notably Essex (Colchester) and Yorkshire (Catterick). We still have some Army formations here but uniforms are infrequently seen now.
The area is undergoing redevelopment but this will take quite a few years to reach full potential.
Aldershot and Farnborough come under the Rushmoor Council which is an amalgamation of the two old town councils and I guess the entire area has a population in the region of probably 65000 and it's growing.
