What's the difference between the Scottish Parliament and London's Parliament? |
Travel Info For instance, what can the Scottish Parliament do and what can't they do? What rule does London's Parliament have over Scotland now? And how do I refer to the Parliament in London--London's Parliament? the UK's Parliament? (I asked this in government, but nobody answered there. Maybe someone here knows.) Travel Tips The Scottish Parliament (referred to as 'Holyrood') deals with health, education, development, agriculture, the Scottish justice system and other matters. It can change income tax in Scotland by up to 3%. It appoints the Scottish Executive to implement its legislation. The British Parliament (referred to as 'Westminster') in London still controls things such as defence, foreign policy, energy matters, security and most things to do with transport in Scotland. Basically anything that requires consistency across the whole of the UK, or things that happen in Scotland but could still affect the whole UK, are still controlled from London. Anything that really only afffects Scotland is dealt with in Edinburgh. |
