Scottish Train Navigation....? ; /?

We have a Scottish Brit-Rail pass and want to know if we need reservations in order to get a seat. How crowded are the trains generally? We'd like to have the flexibility to hop on any train but don't want to take a chance on not securing a seat. We're traveling from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Aberdeen to Stirling, Stirling back to Edinburgh.
