Travel Tips
I've lived in Edmonton all my life, so I guess I could help you out here.

Unfortunately, you didn't give me a lot to work with with your question. You say your office will be on 101 St. but you didn't leave an Avenue number. For the sake of argument, I'll assume you mean in the downtown area. (101 St. N.W. runs north and south through the majority of the whole city, not just downtown, for future reference).

Like most major cities, there are good and bad neighbourhoods. Edmonton is no different. The neighbourhood directly north of downtown is NOT a place you'd want to raise a 4 year old, nor directly east of downtown neither. There is not much in the way of good, affordable housing directly downtown either.

But the short westend of Edmonton is fairly family minded, and quite comfortable. (but a little pricey) I lived in a neighbourhood in the short west called "Oliver". It's fairly quaint and if you live north of Jasper Avenue (101 Ave.) fairly quiet. So anywhere between 111 Street and 123 Street (Between 102 and 104 Avenue) is really a good place to set up your first residence.

There are a number of transit buses that go down both Jasper (101) and 104 Avenue directly into the downtown area, usually every 5-10 minutes. It's best to buy a monthly "bus pass" to travel, as individual fares are quite costly over time ($2.00 Cdn. for 1 adult trip) If you need anymore information about Edmonton, and it's sites, feel free to contact me directly. And welcome to Edmonton (Hope our winter doesn't shock the Hell out of you, but chances are, it will, hehehe) Source(s): 42 long cold years of living here
Other Travel Tips
Hi I am also in the process of moving to Edmonton in 2-3 months time. Let me know if you are intested. We can have a chat. I am from India ( currenlty living in the UK) married and have 4 year old kid. We visited Edmonton during Dec and fell in love with the place. Fanstastic and friendly people. You might want to consider a little bit away form down town within the LTR distance. I would say that you need to buy a car if you want to move around edmonton. It is not well connected.
try looking in the NE side some area are nice and unfourtatly the LRT has not yet connected on the south side try www.rentfaster.com for places I find this site very helpful.
p.s. stay away from the stadium and coliseum(rexall place) these are rough neighborhoods beverly and homesteader are bad as well
Millwoods, there is a main bus terminal at Millwoods Town Center and the bus #8 runs straight downtown. I would suggest not living anywhere in the vicinity of Millbourne mall that is a rough neighborhood. I would look close to the schools there as your child is almost at school age and there is a lot of the same nationality of your kind there. People who you will be able to relate to or with.
I have lived in Millwoods for quite a few years in the past.
anywhere away from the dirty gross downtown core, the further the better. i liked the west end and far north side growing up
