Travel Tips
Edmonton has 20 independent living properties they own where rent is geared to income (approx. 6000 units). The rate is based on 30% of your income per month. Most of these are 1 bdrm and studio apartments in buildings that also have several amenities. They usually have on-site management, recreational events happening throughout the month, security, laundry facilities that are included, etc.

Seniors do have to pay in some cases a minimal amount towards a parking stall, phone and cable service (at a reduced rate). All city owned facility will be going non smoking so any new tenant won't be able to smoke in their units anymore. As of Aug. 2008 they will be totally non smoking though the city will provide a safe spot outdoors for those who do indulge.

Here are some websites you may find helpful:

The next one is actually an online booklet with tons of information on Seniors Housing. You can also pick up a free copy of it in: malls, libraries, Society for the Semi-Retired and grocery store free papers section. It has lots of valuable information not just for Seniors but even for newcomers looking to find information. It is a great source of information.

Another place to look is in the Senior's Monthly newspaper which is free in those stands located in malls and grocery stores. There is a Classified section where many seniors are looking for room.house mates or just renting out. You could even place an ad in it.

It's unfortunate that with the housing/rental market these days being so expensive that seniors are scrambling for affordable housing. Many seniors find one or two other compatible seniors and rent together to save on rent. They also help each other out in that they always have company to do things with and feel safer when not alone.

Hope this is of some value to you.
Good Luck
