Moving to Edmonton?

Travel Info
My boyfriend and I are considering move to Edmonton, AB. Currently we live in the Toronto area. Just sick of the city and jobs for him (trades) are better on west. What is the best area for a young couple, no kids to live in? Am looking for an apartment that allows pets in a nice area, preferred with all utlities included around $600-$900 a month. If you know of any good buildings or sites, please let me know. We may just drive to Edmonton and find a place once we get there.

Thanks a lot!!

Travel Tips
If you're younger and looking for something cheap, I'd move into the Boonie Doon/Capilano area. It's close to Whyte Ave., lots of different malls and the Whitemud is close by, so any where you want to go is easily accessible. My ex used to live on the West end, but we spent a lot more time in my area (Capilano)...We liked the accessibility and the fact that everything was close, yet it was quite safe. The rent isn't too bad - around $600 or so.

Check on-line for Edmonton Apartments, there are loads. Try to do it before college starts up again though, or a few months afterwards. Edmonton can be a hard place to find apartments depending on where you want to live & what time of year. You should have no problem with the amount of rent you can afford though....a decent one bedroom averages around 700.
Live in an apartment in Edmonton
Edmonton is awesome! The best place is probably the west end. There is a lot of new development, with really nice places in the west or south end, not too sure of specific places though, sorry. I would try to stay away from the North end and the Millwoods area cause they are well known most for their crime, but places are probably cheaper there, but for that reason. My cousin's boyfriend came to find a job in the oil trades, from Ontario as well, he had a hard time starting out, he makes amazing money now, a little more then a couple hundred a day, he sent out alot of resumes, the way he got in the oil fields was through a connection...so I would try to set that up before you come over if you can....if your boyfriend is looking for oil work, the best place to look is Fort McMurray, but there isn't alot of housing there. Good luck though, with everything.
oh and "Welcome to Edmonton!"
I'm sorry to hear that you are moving to Edmonton. Why don't you move to Calgary instead. It's a much better city and the job market is hot in Calgary right now.
Part of deciding where you want to live is to look at what sorts of amenities you need, and what sorts of areas you want to avoid. Apartment rentals are getting very expensive, and not a lot of landlords will rent to dog owners. If your dog is small, you will have better luck. If you're in an apartment, you will need close access to places to walk the pooch besides on the sidewalk, and that is why the link to edmonton's parks, for offleash areas and walking trails, which are sublime. If your guy has a trade, he will have no problem looking for work. There's an acute shortage of trades. I have heard of people looking for work who apply and get hired on the spot with top wages. If you yourself do not have a trade or marketable skill, you can still get a job at say, Timmies, for $10 per hour.

Avoid renting in Abbotsfield (cheap, but really rough), inner city (Boyle Street, McCauley, etc.). I would live in the inner city, but that's 'cause I find it interesting, and I already live adjacent to some of edmt's more interesting areas. If you want clean and boring, look at the suburbs, but remember that crime is everywhere.

Also consider looking on the outskirts of town. Places like Nisku hire lots of different trades, and you can probably find accomodation in Leduc.

Before you leave, buy an Edmonton Journal newspaper (magazine shop) on a Saturday. That's when the greatest number of ads for jobs and accomodation come out. Good luck.
