Canada entered WWI at the same time as did Britain as part of Britain's declaration of war (August 1914). By 1918, the end of the war, the country had earned it's place and signed the Treaty of Versailles on their own. Canada declared war on the Axis powers (WWII) at about the same time as did Britain (September 1939) but on it's own, and finished fighting in that war at the same time as well. Canadian troops went to Korea, and are still represented there. Canada did not send troops to Vietnam, although some individual Canadians chose to join the US or other armed forces and fight in Vietnam. Further, the concept of UN peacekeepers was a Canadian one, proposed and developed by a then career diplomat, and a later Prime Minister, Lester Pearson. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for that one. Canadian troops are still serving in such places as Cyprus and Korea as part of the UN peacekeepers. They have also served in the Balkans, the Middle East and Rwanda (where the UN simply refused to support their peacekeeping troops), and are serving in Afghanistan. |
