How is the place Edmonton in the state of Alberta In canada to reside and work in ? |
Travel Info There has been a job offer for my husband ,an engineer, from Colt Engg. group. How genuine will this be?For people like us in our fiffties is it worth taking it up?As we have never worked in the western countires,we are a lilttle apprehensive. My husband is keen to take up the job for better or worse. He is more adventurous than me.Perhaps i do not like to leave my comfort zones. Please advise us.How will the social life be in Edmonton? Will we face racisim? What about expenses?Housing,communication... expenses-how much will we have to spend on these. We are two of us.I do hope our readers will give us their suggestions and help us out.Thank You. Travel Tips I live in Edmonton it is a great place to live! :) Unfortunately the housing prices have increased a lot in the last few years (the average house is almost $400 000). But food costs are not high, utilities have increased along with the price of oil but the wages have increased dramatically. There is a huge demand for any employee (especially oil field workers). Colt eng is an oil field company so i assume that they are paying high wages. Alberta is the most "red neck" province in Canada but there really is little racism (there are idiots every where but I would not be worried about it). Canada is a very multi cultural country and you will be able to find foods that you are familiar with and there are people living here from just about every country in the world. Edmonton is a city of 1 million people so there is lots to do and to see. I don't know where you come from but I am going to assume that since this is an oil field job and you have never lived in a "western" country that you are from the middle east. The culture is very different but there is are huge muslim and hindu populations here (especially in Millwoods). I have never heard of any fighting between religious groups. I know that many people, especially older people, are shocked at how different the culture is here. But if you are open minded you will do very well in Edmonton. This is an estimate of a student's expenses: The following is a rough estimate of monthly living expenses for the average University of Alberta student. Accomodation$400-$800 Utilities$80 Food$200 Public Transportation$55 Leisure$150 Miscellaneous(Cleaning supplies, laundry, Telephone)$90 Total$975-$1375 http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/programs/... Here are some different things about Edmonton: http://www.movetoedmonton.com/ http://www.efmf.ab.ca/ http://www.edmonton.ca/portal/server.pt... http://www.emcn.ab.ca/ http://www.fringetheatreadventures.ca/in... http://www.festivalcity.ca/ Others Hi, First of all Alberta is a province and not a state. At the present time there are a lot of jobs available in Alberta. Your husband is a proffessional and I'm sure he will have no problem gaining employment. Wages are high in Alberta but unfortunataly so is the cost of living. I say "go for it" Edmonton is in the province of Alberta. Go on line and check out some info on the city of Edmonton. The city itself is very nice, alot to see and do. About racisim, there is alot of different ethnic cultures, so I do not see that as much of a problem. Housing has gone up in the last few years, but the wages are fairly reasonable. Like I said get some more info, which your husband can probably get from Colt Engg. group. Don't be afraid look at it as an educational experience. Enjoy yourself while you are there and take in the sights. Best to you and your husband. I live in Edmonton as well and it is a great place to live. Social life in Edmonton is good and it is an easy place to become comfortable. I work in the same building as Colt Eng and it is in a great location 15 minutes south of downtown and close to residential areas and multicultural areas filled with Mediterranean, East Indian and Asian shops. There are also new areas on the south side of the city, 10 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from Colt Eng. which are located near Ellerslie Road which would be a nice and extremely safe place to live. Rent would be about $1,200.00 for a two bedroom condo and housing prices would average $400,000.00 in that neighbourhood. Hope this helps, and good luck with your journey. P.S. Think of waiting until March to come I would hate for your first week in Edmonton to be -40C. ;) I agree with the previous entries on all but housing costs a 3 bedroom house will run you an average of 1500 a month but 2 bedroom apartments will run you about $800-$1100/month to buy a house in most well respected areas will cost on average $300 000.00 so long as you are not wanting a high end house they will run you anywhere from 400 000 to million dollar homes but there is virtually no racism but some people in this world are always going to be quick to judge don't let that discourage you for every one idiot here there are 100 friendly hands and don't forget to let your local welcome committee know you are arriving they will come over and bring you gifts and coupons as well as pamphlets and talk to you about your new neighbourhood and will let you in on a few kept secrets on the beauty of our fair city you can locate them through your areas health centre or community league Best of luck in your decision we will be pleased to have you |
