WHY IN THE HELL are new homes in Edmonton Alberta?

Travel Info
so much money? I mean really now, yesterday I was in the area of COPPERWOOD (west side) and this 2700 sq.ft house to buy was 1.19 million???? WHY?????
And the weird thing was to have it built would be 850,000 why the difference in building it versus buying the showhome?
Are prices here just going to get even more utterly riducoulous or should I move to london ontario and live in a dream home for less than half that price?
I currently live in ontario. Please tell me why new homes are so expensive now?

Travel Tips
Simple Economics
Supply and Demand
and
Location, Location, Location

Alberta is the place to be
Everybody is moving here so the demand has gone up but the supply has not matched the demand = higher prices
(still not that bad for a major city with such a high average wage)

Others
The answer is quite simple really - because people like yourself are moving into a province where there is a shortage of workers. The bigger the shortage the higher the wages but we also have less workers to do the job so the cost of the product raises. Yes, it's called supply and demand - the demand for new housing is at a premium - with long waits and escalating prices.

When you said the price to build was $850,000 did you happen to include the price of the lot? Most builders don't include it in an estimate price for a new home.

I should tell you that NOT ALL new housing is priced in the over 1 million dollar range in fact only 20 homes last year were sold in the over 1 million range so it definately isn't the norm. There are plenty of new and newer homes for sale in the $500,000 range. It just depends on what area of the city you want to live in. As to why you would only limit your search to the westside of city is beyond me.

You might want to even check out a few of the bedroom communites - those towns that almost feel like they are part of the city but aren't. Some you might want to look at are: St. Albert, Sherwood Park and even Beaumont. All have newer housing being build and certainly not in the million price tag. A lot of that price tag is related to the Location of the homes. I'm guessing you must have been in or around the Lewis Estates? Beautiful area but there are certainly others equally in demanding areas in and around the city.

As for being ridiculous - Edmonton is is still concerned fairly reasonable as far as major cities go - in fact we are only the 5th highest ranking city. If you feel the way you do - why would you be considering a move to our fine city? If all you're looking for a big house for a small price tag you can certainly find those in many cities and towns throughout Canada not just London, Ont.
If you're already so angry and frustrated maybe it's a sign that you won't find happiness in our city.

I wish you luck finding that dream House of yours.
They cost more because there a lot more people moving to edmonton... Supply and Demand. The average time it take to get any house sold in Edmonton is one day.
if you don't want to live in Edmonton don't
I love it here
but the great thing about Canada we have freedom
I find the housing prices to be reasonable compared to most major cities especially considering the great boom we are having
