Every part of the city has it's good and bad areas. Unfortunately the way real-estate in Edmonton is going, you might just have to grab what you can get at this point.

I found a great resource for you:

http://www.edmonton.ca/socialplan/list_o...

you can read detailed statistics on any neighbourhood in Edmonton. Probably the category you would be interested in is the stats on crime. If you need other information, just browse the city of Edmonton website, they should have what you are looking for http://www.edmonton.ca

This website should also help with any other questions you have http://www.movetoedmonton.com

Avoid the downtown areas. They can be a little iffy. Lots of crime and some run-down houses and apartments, but cheap rent. The south end of town is a great place to live, lot's of restaurants and shops. It's a little more expensive to live in the south part of town, but it's well worth it. It also depends on where your'e working. The north end of town isn't too bad either. Near West Edmonton Mall is pretty good too, it's close to transportation and, of course, The Mall. Good luck!
i don't agree with that other person at all. downtown area is really cool and close to everything. i lived in the oliver area for 5 years and it was great. close to grocery stores, banks, stuff downtown, the river valley, etc. downtown is where its at!
Edmonton is a huge multi cultural city that improves every year, areas once repressed have now become impressed, the north end (north of jasper ave btwn 124st and 23st)seems to be a high crime volume area, downtown has an array of highrise condominiums, established 3 storey walk ups and apartment hotel situations, the rental market in Edmonton is getting very hard, basically proximity to your needs is important(work,shopping,cultur... events)parking downtown like in any major city is pricey and hard,as in many urban centers, homeless people seem to converge in downtown areas as they are usually more populated. It has a lovely view of the River Valley north and south and a very progressive transit system. My interpretations:Downtown and UofA area lots of singles, west end:established families Southside:Multicultural:North -End:High Crime,if you like the arts,it's a treasure!Great medical facilities as well,as it is the provincial capital,a lot of federal money is allotted to Edmonton,It is the 5th popoulous city in Canada:#1,Toronto,#2Montreal.#... check out the link below, hope this helps!

Southside
Some parts of Downtown are really nice (but expensive) other parts are not so nice.

Castledowns area is nice, and close to everything.
The west end is nice, but also a little pricey.
Avoid parts of Clareview, although some people may argue that.
What about surrounding areas? There's Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, they are nice places too.
