How many pyramids were built in egypt? |
Travel Info How many pyramids were built in egypt? Travel Tips There are just over 200 pyramids that have been recognised as being historically and culturally significant. Most have all been investigated and documented by archaeologists and Egyptologists. A small number are still being investigated, as their individual history has yet to be fully researched. In addition their ages and probable builder has not yet been confirmed. Sadly, many are almost unrecognisable as the magnificent monuments and mortuary complexes that they once were.Man and time have both taken their toll on these once imposing monuments to the power of Ancient Egypt. It is virtually impossible to know for sure how many pyramids were built in Egypt But it is recognised that pyramid building was the accepted way of burial for a Pharaoh, during the Old Kingdom. The first recognised pyramid being that of Pharaoh Djoser 2584-2565BC. He was the first Pharaoh of the Old Kingdom. It appears that one of the last true pyramids to be built belongs to Pharaoh Pepi II 2212-2118. Pepi II was not only, virtually the last Pharaoh of the 6th Dynasty, but of The Old Kingdom itself. Pharaoh Nemptyemsaf II, reigned only for 1 regnal year.If he did actually built a pyramid in such a short time, which is very unlikely. It has yet to be located. It is likely partly due to the extremly long reign of Pepi II,that Egypt was in a state of turmoil by the time of his death. Economic decline impeaded the beginings of the Ist Intermediate Period. There was a long list of rapidly changing Pharaohs and a disintegration of the state leading to economic downfall of the country. It was not until the 11th Dynasty that stability returned. But by this time the Pharoahs favored a very different style for their eternal resting places. Source(s): Egyptology student The Complete Royal Families of Egypt.
