Do we Egyptians have an identity crisis? |
Travel Info Do we Egyptians have an identity crisis? Travel Tips We aren't the only ones who have identity crisis, others do too but they are good at hiding it. We, as Egyptians, are more emotional when it gets to talking about our country and ancestors. But I guess we aren't totally sure when it comes to defining ourselves, specially w/ regard to the current events happening in the middle east. I personally don't call myself an arab person, I call myself an Egyptian. People tolerate the idea of being an Egyptian better than "arabic". But why aren't we Africans, specially that Egypt is located in North Africa. I used to take a Black history class in university, and my teacher was so excited when she knew I was from Egypt. She told everyone that I was African although I'm not even "kam7aweya". Alot of people can't even tell that I'm middle eastern! But anyways, it's not about the skin color, but it's about what we feel at heart and what we believe in. It's sad though b/c if we can't identify ourselves, our kids and grandkids won't be able either and the cycle would continue to go on. But we are lost in the middle of this whole arab, middle-easter, african dilemma! Others can you be more specific? I know we have lots of crises. i don't understand your question really.. we are normal people passed through crisis just like others but we know how to Manage a tragedy in our way which is not bad at all . cheer up!! Egyptian Yup !!! I will speak for myself here: I find it really hard to define my ideologies and my orientations. It's not an easy thing being a Muslim in this era and in this specific country. There is no clear definition for what a "Muslim" should do , or be. You will find people who will argue about every specific and tiny detail of the religion. You will find people who will agree to what Bin Laden did, and people who curse him. People who believe that bank interests are right, and people who think they are wrong. Is music and singing right or wrong ? Is chatting right or wrong ? As an Egyptian, I don't feel any better. All around you , you see people cursing this country and dying to get out of it. And people who live "abroad" and say that there is no greater place than Egypt. Then why won't the people who hate it just go, and the people who love it come ? Everything is corrupted. There are no morals and no ethics. Even amongst your closest ones. The worst thing is that nobody knows that what they are doing is wrong. Even worse, I myself don't know if I am right or wrong in many cases. As an Arab, I used to be very proud as a young kid of the whole idea of unity and group efforts. All these dreams get chattered as I grow older and realize that there is no such a thing as unity between Arabs. We don't unite unless there is a disaster. Why don't we unite in times of peace ? All Egyptians suffer from identity crises. Some people know it and realize it. Some people don't. I know that I am lost in a huge turbulant sea of religion, ethics and cultural belonging. yes of course we have as any one else |
