Travel Info Where were most of the farms located in Lower & upper Egypt? And why do you think this was so? Travel Tips The only arable land for farming exists along the banks of the Nile Valley. In ancient times the Delta region was known as the breadbasket of Egypt. In later times the Delta became silted up and was not as productive as it was in early Dynastic eras. There are no tributary rivers of the Nile in Egypt so it is the only source of irrigation water for crops and general farming. This is achieved by the construction and maintainance of channels that are traditionally watered by means of a shadouf. The annual inundation would flood the entire valley to some degree. But it brought with it from the mountains a rich black loam that the Egyptians called kmt or kemet. They also called themselves the people of Kemet. It was this kemet/loam that was the key to the farmers ability to grow and harvest up to three crops per year. It is interesting that since the opening of the Aswan Dam the amount of the rich life giving loam has dwindled. To the point, farmers are now forced for the first time in history to use fertilisers to assist their crops to grow. Source(s): Final yr. Egyptology student. References:lecture notes Other Travel Tips I think they are close to the Nile for water for the crops since there is alot of desert and dry areas in Egypt Nile delta and along the river bank are the only fertile lands perfect for agriculture. The Egyptians farmers lived along the higher ground along the banks of the Nile. Every year the Nile flooded and the rich deposit of silt that was left, was good for crop growing. The flood waters originated from the snow in Ethiopia and flowed into the Nile. Their diet included wheat and barley as the main crop, melons beans, grapes, onions, garlic, figs, dates and leeks. The ancient Egyptians had their farming year very well organised. try http://www.angelfire.com/ca/pye/life.htm... best of luck only 3% of egypt is arrable that includes the 100 oasis that we have in the desert areas of the new valley.most of the 3% is irrugated from the Nile.
