I went in January for 16 days and at times it seemed too long, and at other times it seemed to be too short. I would certainly go if I had a chance to go for only five days. Especially if you were free to extend your trip by paying a minimal airline fee. Money is not a real concern. If you have any money, you have more than most people in the Cairo area. Food is certainly not overpriced, drinking alcohol is not accomplished that often, as there are only a few bars, usually in nice hotels. Nothing too expensive, unless you start to drink American alcoholic drinks, which are obviously imported. Drink local alcohol as it is excellent and gets the same job done. You will be taking taxi's everywhere you go. Great idea to see if the driver speaks English, or whatever your language is, prior to getting in the taxi. I had excellent taxi drivers and will probably always consider some of them my true friends. I took a taxi to Alexandria on the Mediterranian coast, just a couple of hours north of Cairo, great place. I took a taxi to see the Sea and the Suez Canal. Another great time. I found a taxi driver that I enjoyed and used him exclusively for 4-5 days, then found another one that I enjoyed and used him for 4-5 days, then did the same thing again. They took me to what they called "tourist" restaurants, and they were certainly worth the trip and the money. I always paid for the drivers meals when we ate in restaurants. They treated us like kings, with very elaborate spreads, very reasonablly priced. Hotels range from good, to damn good, to too damn good. The prices are reasonable for what you get. I traveled alone, and can assure you that there are no crimes in Cairo. I never felt unsafe, unsure, or threatened. As a matter of fact, if you are an American, there is a good chance that there will be an armed guard out front, to be sure you are safe. They don't want any incidents to negatively affect their relationship with America. I'd go at the drop of a hat. Personal experiences, knowledge picked-up from people over there, wandering the town alone at night, Yahoo Answers! has an Egyptologist that goes by the name "sistablu". You can trust her with your information needs. Guaranteed. Ricky i am not going to comment on what is already been told. , first as soon as you say american $$$$$$$$$$ is what they see never pick up a guide or any one. a meal on average will cost about 45le in a restaurant go wth an egyptian or guide you will pay for his food that will be the most expensive in the place plus his drinks your bill will look like this.70+70+70drinks +plus tax'= 160. then your man will use an excuse to go back says he left something to pick up his at least 30% commision dont forget the meal on your own would be 45le. now you have paid for his meal and his drinks and he gets 60le in his pocket. now do that twice a day for five days that is over 1000le instead of 450. taxi's get the hotel to phone a taxi all the hotels use there own man, ie the guy who picks you up at the airport will recommend a hotel. thats because if he gets you to stay there he gets 30% commision. make sure he speaks english ask him how much for the day, as soon as you agree a price make sure he says le not$ or 拢 shake hands give him half the money. now this guy is going to stick to you like s to a blanket.where he drops you off that is where he is going to be when you say 1 hour to do the pyramids. once you get back to your hotel you pay him, nothing more nothing less.(the pyramids is just an example) need more on prices etc send an e off my web site, fill in the booking form state you only want the do' and don'ts, it is an outomated response for uk and us only. its free. and well worth the effort of filling in.www.myegypt.co.uk |
