As almost all Egyptians even remotely connected to the tourist industry speak good English and often French and Italian or German as well! You will be really surprised, as I was the first time I came here. Like you I thought I would have to go everywhere with my Arabic phrase book clutched in my hand and spent weeks practicing before I left home. The schools here teach English or French as a second language and the rest is picked up by mixing with so many tourists from all over the world. Now I am living here part time and I can still only speak a little Arabic. As everyone talks to me in English,even in the fruit and vedgie market. They teach other languages at schools like French, Dutch, etc, but they aren't commonly used.
