Can this be considered as 3o2dit elkhawaga? I like Big bird better than Nimnim!? |
Travel Info As a kid I grew up with Sesame Street and The Electric Company. As an adult I still enjoy Sesame Street. I love Big bird, Ernie, Bert, Oscar, Elmo and Grover a whole lot more than I like Khokha, Filfil And Nimnim. Actually, I can't stand Filfil in particular! Anyhow, my 4 year old daughter loves Alam Simsim and I think that it instills in her our own cultural values and traditions, which Sesame Street can't do. But I can't help but notice the huge difference between the two. Which do you think is better for her to watch? Travel Tips It is because this is what you got used to watch as you were growing up. I used to like to watch "Tom and Jerry" and "Walt Disney" cartoon because this used to be the only available cartoon on Egyptian television when I was growing up. At that time, Egypt didn't know how to make its own cartoon. Now we do have Egyptian cartoon, but alas! It's so mediocre in quality and animation that it makes me sick. It lacks all kinds of vivid imagination and stimulating ideas. However, kids love it. They love it because this is the only thing that they have now. My advice to you is to let your kid watch both and decide for herself. Let her watch the Egyptian cartoon to help her familiarize herself with the fact that "Egyptian" can mean funny and interesting in some ways. Also let her watch the American and foreign shows to let her mind be intrigued with all the fascinating worlds of imagination that the foreign media can provide. You do not want your kid to grow up to become shallow and dull. In the mean time, you do want her to have something in common with the other kids in the Egyptian culture. Edit : Concerning the unusual values, it is a good idea for you to sit down and watch some of her favourite shows with her. I am not suggesting you spend all your time watching T.V. I am only proposing that you get the main idea of what the show is about. It would be great if you can have a discussion with her afterwards about the items that you would like to accentuate or even discard. I understand your anxiety of un-supervised foregin shows. Those shows can be a serious hazard. I do know that "South Park" is a cartoon after all. This is why I suggested that you practise some role of censorship over what she should and should not watch. However, if there is any certain show that falls within the grey area; good but with some bad values, I suggest you let her watch it and then emphasize the points that you want her to learn. Let us try to bring our kids up to self-monitoring and self-control rather than the outside censorship that we grew up in. Others Niether, she better watch Bakkar Boogy we Tamtam No this is not 3o2det el khawaga at all , its what u got used to and what was available in our days , i grew up out of Egypt and watched all cartoon and shows in English ,recently i came to know that we have an Arabic version . let Ur daughter watch what she likes besides try to make her watch other cartoon channels like spacetoon English ,they show barney and teletubbies, all children i know love them and sing their songs .( you can buy her teletubbies dolls so when she see them on TV will get more attracted to them) there's nothing to do with elkhawaga , the foreign programs like Sesame Street is more realistic and doesn't make a fool of any one like Egyptian programs , but I'm with you that these programs are belongs to their own cultural values and that would be harmful to our children , may be the Egyptian artists and the Egyptian producers , can understand what they are doing to our children and try to learn some lessons from programs like Sesame Street , however there's a British program you can let your children to watch it and nothing is bad with it , its name is ( art attack ) children can learn a good amount of English language and also a lot of good artistic ideas , and at the same time it has nothing to do with differences in cultures and values . |
